i have a question for any of you that board dogs, i went away for ten days, my dog was boarded for 12 days, when i went to pick him up looked bad, very bad, i asked the if he was eating they said yes, i asked if he been sick, throwing up , diarhea, anything, they said no-well after i got him home,he was kind of lazy & had very bad diarhea, he also drank so much water he threw up, i told them hes a bucket swimmer, so they have to put his bucket of water high, he also paces in his kennel, even at home, well i got worried about him so i called vet this morning, brought him over to get something to stop the diarhea, he was a little dehydrated so he gave him some fluid under skin & also he had lost a significant amount of weight, im going back to the vet tommorrow to get a re-check, right now hes on small amounts of boiled rice & hamburg and small amount of water at a time, does this seem like neglect to any of you   ?

The question is did he pick up an infection while in the kennel? Or was he just crazy while there? What kind of conditions exist in the kennel? Are the dogs all barking constantly and going crazy? Or is there structure? I have had hundreds of dogs through my facility in 4 years and many who live here permanently. NO dog has ever left ill or in the condition you describe. I would wonder how often and with what the kennel is disinfected with? Type of air handling, how often or if he was nose to nose with other dogs and whether he had something like giardia BEFORE going to the kennel which then manifested there..... Neglect is possible, but unless you can prove it, just that....only a possibility. You definitely have cause to have a conversation with the kennel owner and had a dog been as you describe here, in my care would have already seen a vet..... Good luck.

he was seen by my vet already, but not till i got home, they had all my contact info-cell,email,hotel number, also my mother was staying at my house, they had that number also, the also had my vets number which i run a bill with so they would not have had to put any money out, the kennel condition is clean, there were other dogs there, not to much barking by the other dogs except for two labs, also he was at the vet the week before we left, he was healthy, no worms, no giardia, healthy-that i know for sure ! what im asking is as a kennel owner , when & do you bring dogs to the vet, this dogs hips bones, spines & ribs are sticking out & i mean sticking out, i paid very good money for this, i must also say my female was there too, shes fine, ill post a pictures of him that i just took, it just seems to me that someone-anyone could or should have noticed something ?????????

Venzosmom, the fact is, some dogs just do not do well when away from home. My GSD, Tasha, was one of those. I boarded her at the vet's for 10 days once, while I took a badly needed vacation, after nursing my husband through his final illness. When I came back, she was a walking skeleton. Other times when I'd boarded her, they told me she wouldn't pee when they took her outside because she'd be so busy looking for me.

The only time she did well when boarded was when the couple who ran the kennel took her inside every evening for a little socialization and play time. I was very, very grateful to them, and really missed them when they retired.

Thank heavens, I have several people now I can count on to come in and look after my dogs while I'm away!

He does appear to be thin, but I have nothing to gauge from in an earlier recent photo. Dehydration can make a dog look terrible. I will say that I also have only had one dog not eat here. She would not eat for four days and that was despite my adding canned food on day three. I also tried bullion broth, cottage cheese, and yogurt. It is VERY rare for a dog not to do well, but there are a few who are not easily adaptable. My guess is that the dog became infected either just before or while at the kennel. For all I know, he might have picked up something at the vets the week before. It happens. But yes, it can happen that a dog would get sick in a kennel. The fact is that one has to be able to look at a dog and know that something is wrong. It is not always easy to tell, especially because most dogs are very stoic and secondly, as a kennel owner, with a new boarder, I will certainly not know the dog well. But there are clues. Certainly if the dog was vomiting, not eating, lethargic, had diarrhea etc., was not drinking (and this has to be measured out to be certain of intake) the dog should have been seen. But he may have also not exhibited these signs while in the clinic.....but, based on your assessment, it seems like someone should have noticed. Again, hard to prove neglect. Again, as a kennel owner, I think the best thing for you to do is work with the vet to get the dog well and to hopefully get a definitive diagnosis. Secondly, you owe it to the kennel owner to speak to them and let them know you are upset and why. Did you, for example, have a weight taken on the dog when it went to the vet the week before? Do you have a weight now? Finally, it is possible that the dog became ill there or at home, but it has NOTHING to do with being kenneled. This is the problem. Too many unknowns...... Good luck.
