I have a 13 1/2 female that has been running a fever of 104 since Wednesday, possible Phnemonia. She is on Baytril 60mg 1 1/2 pills twice a day, plus 2 Asprain 2x a day for fever.  I just got home from work and her temp is 104.8.  I just gave her meds and have tried to get her to drink, she won't even drink chicken broth. Tried forcing her with a spoon, Any suggestions on making her comfortable till morning and to reduce the fever. We have a follow up appointment with our Vet in the Morning.

Since she's on aspirin already (and you have to be careful not to give too much, it can cause ulcers and bleeding) I'd recommend cold packs wrapped in towels against her inner thighs, or anywhere where there's not a lot of hair. You might try sponging her head with cool water too, or place a fan so it's blowing on her, anything that's going to cool her off and get that fever down. Don't overdo it though, you don't want to chill her too much when she's so weak.

Poor dog...good luck with her!

Sunsilver, Thank you for responding. Her temp is down to 104. now. Still not good, though. I will continue with the ice packs for awhile and see if that helps. She will be taking her last car ride tommorrow.

So sad, fm, sorry to hear that. Well, do your best to keep her comfortable during her last night.  Glad I could help a bit.

BTW, another trick is to spritz her with a mister. I have a friend who competes in agility, and that's one of the tricks she uses to  keep her dogs cool between runs. You could also put a slightly damp towel in the freezer for a bit, then spread it out for her to lie on. My agility friend has a special mat that can go in the freezer. I think there's some sort of gel inside that holds the coolness longer than ice would, and is softer to lie on. (She lives in Arizona, so she knows ALL the tricks!)

Also, ice or cool water anywhere where there is little or no hair:  paw pads, mouth, face, ears. (GSD's shed a LOT of heat through those big ears!) You can put an ice cube in her mouth for her to suck/chew on (unless she's unconscious, in which case she might choke on it.)
