I have a friend that does it her self and it actually works, lol. She doesn't want to have to pay the vet to do it!

The success rate with AI is going to depend on if your talking fresh, chilled, or frozen. The best advice anyone can give you is find the best reproduction vet you can. That will also increase your odds of having success at doing an AI.

MY vet chatges 59.00 for a AI but you have to do progesterion testing first and each one of those is 69.00.I just had 5 tests done before she was ready for the AI.Then with fresh semen we did 3 AIs.
Dr.Hutchon in Cleveland is the leading repo man in Ohio and he has some really neat new repo things going on.I just went to a seminar he gave last week and next AI I have to do would be with him.He is a little costly but has a 96 percent rate.

There is information available (for a price, of course) on Ed Frawley's website http://www.leerburg.com This can be done by a person who has the appropriate training and sterile conditions. Basically there are two (2) types of artificial insemination: surgical and non-surgical. The surgical method involves a small incision made in the lower adomen through that fresh or thawed semen is injectrd into the uterus via a hypodermic syringe. The non-surgical method involves a device similar in function to a "turkey baster" (yes, my slang term for it as well). The surgical A.I. is much more of a sure thing when compared to the non-surgical.
So which one? I prefer non-surgical of course, but after adding the cost of at least two (2) and more likely three (3) progesterone level tests the surgical method seems like not much more expense. Especially if the semen is from a highline male of extreme quality and the minimum risk is wanted due to the vast amount of money already spent and the fact that said male has very limited availability.
Be aware that the S.V. will not register a litter that is produced by A.I. and there may be sanctions against the participating parties involved-really cannot say there. They maintain the idea that a proper breeding must be a natural breeding, or it just was not intended to occur. The A.K.C. does allow this practice and does have a special litter registration form for this purpose. Who is right? Can't say and won't say. The ethics involved are not the purpose of the original post.

If you use fozen semen you need to do surgical. With chilled you can do either sugical or non-surgical but sugical has a little better success rate.
The kits that Frawley sells are for fresh semen incemeninations only.
