Can dogs still go as xtra baggage on Lufthansa and what does it cost now? I know some of the US airlines don't do it anymore. Thanks in advance.

Hey  Country Boy.  You should contact Lufthansa in your area to be sure, sometimes policies vary from airport to airport.  I think they do still take dogs.  I KNOW that Condor, who is affiliated with Lufthansa takes dogs.  Sometimes they only take one dog per flight, however, so you'll have to start calling to find out the particulars for your own area.

Lots of luck! ~ Veronica

Two dogs accompanied a friend from Germany this past September. They flew on Lufthansa from Germany to the mid-west without any difficulty and the cost was less than half what it would have otherwise cost to ship as cargo.

In July they were still allowing dogs to fly as additional baggage. And this was flying out of Frankfurt into Detroit. There also was no hassle with getting the dog through customs with all the proper paperwork in tact. The only thing we had to do was inform them prior to the flight to be sure there would be enough room on the plane. I hope this helps. The cost for our 75 lb. dog was about $320.00 USD.

I just brought a dog home on Lufthansa with me a month ago- Helsinki to Los Angeles. I was able to make the reservation a month in advance for the dog, and the reservation showed that I was bringing a dog home. The dog was not a GSD, but was 70lbs flying in a 500 sized crate.

The only confusion was the price- I had been told $250 USD MANY times, but when I got there that morning for the flight it was 250 Euro. Not a big deal, though. They took very good care of the dog.

Ouch, back in the day I shipped my dogs as baggage, through Lufthansa with me aboard for $120 a dog. I'm only 32 so it wasn't all that many years ago. Glad they are still offering that service though. Good airline to fly with. Either way there was not wait or hang up at customs. Arrangements were made at least a month in advance.

As of a few months ago LTU airlines still allowed you to fly with the dog, checked as a piece of luggage, for free.

Country Boy,
When you find out please post for the rest of us.  In the 80's you could take two puppies as extra baggage, but I don't have a clue as to now. A friend of mine that imports on a pretty regular basis has always sworn by them.  Let us know.

I spoke with Lufthansa earlier today and the lady at the 1-800 Reservations number said $127 for the dog as xtra baggage. We'll see when I go to check in and pay. Wonder if it will be any different coming back??? Seems like thats about the same price its been for the last 10 yrs or so. Wish I could say the same about shipping prices. Man have they gone crazy!
