I'd love opinions negative/positive or just comments on these x-rays, and results (haven't sent them in yet but plan to)

First one - 7 month old female

2 year old male

I would say the 7 month old shows a shallow socket on the animals left side.

The 2 year old seems to have show malformation on the animals right socket and a somewhat smalled ball.

  But I am no expert.

Best guess - preliminary, mild to moderate HD on the puppy, shallow sockets, maybe unilateral. OFA good to excellent on the 2  year old. Both were sedated?

yes, both sedated.

The puppy wasn't in season when she was xrayed, was she?

Molly, the first one has shallow sockets, moreso on the left-hand side I think but my opinion may be due to the observed displacement of the femoral ball. There is a displayed bit of laxity but this is a puppy-very normal. Possibly borderline to mild hip dysplasie. Possibly O.F.A. "Fair" at the age of twenty-four (24) months depending on the level of improvement. Tough one here.

The second shows really good sockets on both sides. Barring the presence of any arthritic development, this should at least be an O.F.A. "Good". The dog is a bit out of position but not so bad. I think everything critical can be seen here.

Good Luck On Both!

I don't think the pup was in season, but could have been close - first season might have missed it.  Not sure.  I agree the 2nd x-ray was not good positioning, I was not happy with my vet for that as it may make a difference between good and excellent :)  I am considering having him re-done before sending them in - any opinions?  His prelim was OFA Good and his full (older) siblings are adult OFA Good and Excellent.

Molly, frankly I would think about xraying her again. If she came in within 3, 4 weeks of having that xray, or if she were in season 3, 4 weeks before, that could account for the luxation.  If you like her, I'd take another look. My problem is that it is  that one side is more shallow than the other and I don't know if hormones would have that sort of effect or not.

As far as the male goes, IMO he will get a good with that xray and might get an excellent on a better one. The positioning could be better, but it's diagnostic.

7 mos. female Fail - heat or not in heat has no effect on shallow sockets and the bone on the tips of the socket already show rounding and wear. Will not improve with age.

2 yr. male Pass - will not speculate as to rating due to the very poor pssitioning. I would not send in this xray. Just look at the postioning of the tips of the pelvis on the left hip side. Leg is pulled way to far in. I would re-xray for better picture and send that in. Could be the difference between Good or Excellent!

Not a guru opinion but 35+ years looking at hip xrays.
