Would like to hear from people who actually breed; both show lines and working line people.

If you had to make a choice between breeding to win (show or sport) or breeding to meet the GSD standard, which would you choose? And Why?

Would you compromise or exceed the "Standard" to meet your needs?

Breed to standard, always. Correct structure, strong working temperament, and good health. I'd be much, much happier to breed a middle V dog that is amazing worker than a VA that barely gets it done.

Depends on your interpretation of the Standard!

Thank you Kaffirdog.. That's another way to ask the same question.  How many breeders feel the standard is open to their own interpretation?

How many of you feel the Standard is set and not open to interpretation?

If you are breeding working dogs; I think you should  breed to win

by southtexan on 23 November 2007 - 01:11

Ok...Why do you think that and give an example of what part of the standard you would be willing to "compromise" on if it would produce a GSD that you desire?

Not a "trick" question just curious of the mental decisions breeders make in selecting the dogs to breed.

Your statement shows your intelligent about the breed.  Breeders of working dogs should always breed to the standard.  Any one who thinks otherwise is truly an idiot.

Hello,

I think selective breeding is a vehicle to an end, and it is of paramount importance to know exactly what do you want to produce.

If you want to breed GSD you have to stick to the standard.  Breeding acording to the standard you can go in any direction you want (show/work).

On the other hand, if your goal is to produce a specific kind of dog, with an specific pupose in mind, and by doing so you detach from the standard, the result of that breeding migth be a better dog for your personal goals, but it wont be a GSDs (it is not complying with the standad).

Regards,

Mariano.

If a breeder breeds a dog that is 1-2 inches above or below the standard, has a white spot on it's chest, or white toenails, and that dog wins a national championship.............

That is the type of idiot I want to be.
