Oops submitted to soon. Anyways, I have a female that weighs 60lbs and she ate half a bar of one of the big bars of chocolate. She has a litter of 9 3 week puppies. Is it going to be safe for her to feed the puppies? My vet doesn't do emergancy services so any help would be greatly appreciated. We did give her some peroxide diluted in water to try and make her vomit. What warning signs should I be looking for?

Ok first get some milk substitute and I hope you have puppy chow by a good brand not purina handy...Have you started the pups on solids....
If not use 1 can evaporated milk
1 can of filtered water bottle
1 egg yolk not white white doesnt digest.
1 tbd white karo syrup dark karo if no white.
mix shake good refrigerate cook small amount of cream of wheat or Malt o meal put in big pyrex glass dish dilute with warm mile from mixture....only start with a small amount of malt of meal it makes a lot when you dilute it to mush......put in floor make it runny so they can lick it and put them up to dish and keep putting them there .....first couple of times the will walk in it or not eat ,,,use a syrnge to feed them if need to for the first time '''
That way you can wait a day before useing Mom ...let the chocolate get out of her system......

Also, remember that most "chocolate" bars are very diluted as far as actual chocolate so I'd do what yellow is saying for sure but may not be as serious as it could be. Unless it's the more gourmet type chocolate, that is.

Thats right she will have diahrea and not to dispose into the pups safe to just feed them mush they should already be eating , that many pups on a mom are hard on her and feeding them now gives them a start and helps her...anyway...
She will be ok and let the pups drink from the dish and make it runny and all will be ok....dont let mom eat milk or clean up their mess this time withdraw her food except some bread to absorb what doesnt come up ......if it doesnt come up
Dont have any idea how long ago this ingestation happened...
One half of a bar is ok...glad she didnt find a whole package of choco chips for baking.....
Leave those for THANKSGIVING...PLEASE.....

Thanks everyone for your help. She ate a Hersheys milk chocolate bar around 3 hrs ago. She seems to be doing fine. I will keep a close eye on her and will start to substitute the pups food. I was planning on starting to wean them soon anyways. I guess it will just be a little sooner then I planned. Thanks again.

Just keep her away from them for a day or so then let them suck and eat both....she can eat what they dont eat but not just now.. dont let her eat anything but bread for the next 24 hours and water of course.....In a day or so soak their puppy food in goats milk. , and you can get that at Petsmart also or at the grocery store unless you have goats.....its full of vits...

What does chocolate do to a dog?

Weird about the chocolate thing. My grandmother had a german shepherd in the 70's and she LOVED chocolate.
Never had a problem with it and she ate a ton. But then she only lived to be 14.
It wasn't until I had dogs myself that I realized they shouldn't have any.
