Hello!  Didn't want to sound crude, and put "3 hour erection" as the subject line, and I know some folks on this list can be more cruse than that, but I have a serious question!

We had a lady call from a smaller club yesterday, who said her male has on three occasions, erections that have lasted for over 3 hours.

She took him to her vet, and apparently the vet said to have him neutered!  No explanation though....What kind of answer is that?   Has anyone had this happen before and what is the cause or the fix it solution?   We told her to call a reproduction specialist vet, but this seems really odd.  The Viagra commercial says call a doctor right away after 4 hours, so 3 hours in a dog must be BAD!   Any info is appreciated!

A repro specialist sounds like a good way to go.  As I don't think that neutering the dog will "fix" the problem either.

Yes i have had this happen with a customers dog. He was an italia G hound. Becasue of the over abundance of testostron in this dog he would make outside ties and keep them for 2 to 3 hours. this is dangerous to the dog because hecould injure himself or brake the bone. It also causes drying of his penis and could cause his to no longer be able to pull back into the sheth. It is a over sexed male. my vet who i worked for at the time talked to her about this. He did not say that he new of a reason that caused it. He also told her to neuter this dog and with in 3 weeks there was no longer a problem. He still wanted to breed a female in heat and did tie a few times after his neuter. But all in all it fixed this problem. Plus if this dog is not used for breeding then there is no reason realy to not him him fixed. I would be conserned about breeding a male that could tie for that long as one or both does could become hurt. JMO..

This is a painful medical condition called Priapism (named of the Greek god of fertility, Priapus--who had a constant erection). Sometimes people and dogs suffer from Priapism following an injury to the pelvis or lower spine.

To learn more, do a Google search for Priapism or Priapus.

Oh a DOG's reproductive parts!    I thought for a moment we were talking about stud muffin Don Corleone.  Oops wrong thread.

Not on my male, but a friends GSD mix pup.  The hairs got curled inward and caught inside the sheat and made it impossible for the sheath to cover the penis.  Just tossing it out there as another possible cause.

Castration or consultation with a repro vet is not the answer (consider that the condition may also occur in infants). This form of persistant erection has nothing to do with simply not being able to retract the penis into the prepuce. The dog needs to be seen by a urologist with a lot of high tech equipment.

What WiscTiger is refering to is paraphimosis: (http://courses.vetmed.wsu.edu/vm552/urogenital/male.htm)

Paraphimosis is when the penis is extruded from the prepuce and cannot be returned to its normal position. This may occur following breeding or sexual excitement such as being kenneled next to a bitch in heat, or by a traumatic fracture of the os penis. This is an emergency. Penile tissue dries out rapidly and becomes necrotic and gangrenous. Dysuria may develop from compression of the urethra. Treatment includes cold packs to decrease swelling and lubricants. It may be necessary to incise the prepuce to replace the penis and place a temporary purse string suture in the prepuce to prevent recurrence. Amputation of the penis is necessary if it is gangrenous.

Priapism is a constant state of erection unrelated to sexual desire. Causes include spinal cord lesions, genitourinary infection, injury to the genitals, blood diseases, arterial blood pressure problems, or constipation. Treatment is for the underlying cause.   Bland ointments should be applied to prevent drying of penile tissues.

We had a lady call from a smaller club yesterday, who said her male has on three occasions, erections that have lasted for over 3 hours. She took him to her vet, and apparently the vet said to have him neutered!

KariM, tell the woman not to have her dog neutered. Kari, I know that you (and, I presume, the woman) live in Northern California. I believe that the dog should be seen at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital at UC-Davis. The owner does not need a referral by her regular veterinarian.

As soon as the next crisis occurs, the dog may be seen immediately and treated as an emergency (yes, there is an extra emergency fee--and possible ICU charges) at the VMTH--open 24/7, 365 days a year. During evenings and weekends, there is always a resident (a post-graduate veterinarian) and a "resident assist" (a veterinary student) who sleep at the hospital. If needed, there are specialists on call.

Our 11 year old GSD  had complete sex with himself from 7 months of age. This occurred many times thru out the day. It almost killed him. We had him neutured at 3 . He still does the dirty every few days. He has been tested and has zero testerone, the condition is caused by the Adrenal Gland and is quite common in thoroughbred horses. Neutering did slow him down.
