Shepherd Woman

Hi.  I have never thought about training Chaos for schutzhund.  I have been asked by several people that know us if we plan on it.  I started thinking today about it and thought "why not"???  Only thing is, I have NO idea how in the heck to get started if I decide to do it OR where to look for some place VERY close to us where I could start him out.  We live in lower Michigan by Kalamazoo.  Any ideas, and do you honestly think it's a stupid idea for a long coat like Chaos??? Honest opinions please, I can take it!  I think, LOL.  I am really serious though.  Just to let you know......  Thanks ahead of time for your answers.

Hi figure the odds we got the same frist name......anyway try looking for a Schutzhund club that  is close to your house and then ask them if you can come out and watch them train.  They can also evaluate your dog to see if your dog can do the work. here are few web sites to start you off and good luck

Give it it try.  I found a private trainer in the area and took Molly for an initial evaluation.  I was nervous as she is a show line and a long coat and really did not expect much.  We have been training since August and are having loads of fun and she is coming along nicely.  She has her bh and I am hoping we can get her ready to try for her SchI in the spring.

So, give it a try.  You too might catch the bug.

There are ads and Fleischerheim has dogs advertised on his site today  ..a long hair on every site    and they all have SchutH 1, 2 and 3 on them

Long Hair has not bearing on it...just beware some of the know it all people in the club will start in on you that y know y cant breed her , as if you havent heard that a million times.....every day a top SchutH line births several long hair gsd...they are in all our lines.....so tell them to knock it off....you are there to train not breed. and ignore their petty conversations on that subject....

Go for it! Being a longcoat only precludes him from breeding, not from working. You'll have lots of fun and so will he.

Quite a long time ago, I went to some guys house where he trains dogs.  You leave the dog there for a month and this guys trains your dog!  I don't know if it's schutzhund or not, but you think it's worth checking out?  I would hate to leave him anywhere though.  I would miss him so much.  I'd probably cry my self to sleep every night, lol.  He's my baby!  Any way, it's this guys business I guess.  I have looked online for clubs and ALL of them are 2 hours away or more!  With gas prices the way they are etc. my husband would be totally against this, I know him!  I would need to find a way to do it and not have to travel like that.  Does anyone live in lower Michigan and know of something closer to Kalamazoo?

If you cannot find a club, look for a private trainer.  I have found this works great because you can get alot of one on one training especially if you are new to the sport.  This way you can arrange training on your terms, specifically at your pace.  I think if you send Chaos out for training you will miss out on one of the best parts of obtaining a title.  The satisfaction of learning training methods and practicing them and seeing both you and your dog accomplish something together.  It is hard work and takes time, but is well worth it.  In addition, you can meet great people who can help you along your journey.

I agree with gsdlvr2.  Have fun with him.  Schutzhund is open to any breed so being a long coat for this is a non-issue.

Be very careful who you pick to leave him with for Schutzhund training.  If you're serious ask around here.   And before anybody starts in on you have to do it yourself, if you don't have a club handy there's nothing wrong with getting outside help.

I think you're right about that.  I love training him and showing him.  I think that it's why we have such a tight bond.  He would do anything for me, I know he would!
