Ok, I've got 3 GSD's. Not once has one of the kennels told me that I needed to name my dog with a certain letter! I have friends who have GSD's and they were told that they needed to name there dog with a G, C, S and so on. Pleaseeee explain to me the naming process and why you must name your dog with different letters etc. I really don't understand.

Most kennels breeding by the SV standard name all the puppies from the first litter with A names, followed by the kennel name. The second litter would all have B names, the third C names, and so on.

Howdy,
As a breeder here in Germany we have to do it as follows :
1st litter bred by a registered kennel starts with names for the pups all starting with the letter " A " , followed by the kennel name . Example : Alec (name of pup) vom Holunderbusch (kennel name)
2nd litter bred by this kennel, all puppy names start with the letter "B" followed by the kennel name.
3rd litter bred by this kennel, all puppy names start with the letter "C" followed by the kennel name.
And so on & on......... once you are through the alphabet, you start with "A" again !!
If now a puppy buyer produces a name for his pup starting with the letter that is required, I will put that name down so it will be also in the paperwork. Example : A buyer for a pup out of my "A" litter wanted to name his female " Arwen", so I took that name into the paperwork and Arwen apears as her name in the pedigree. One male out of my "A" -litter is now called Oskar, his kennel name is Amigo. The dog does not care, but the offical name is used when you go to shows or trails etc.

Hello Ulli and good to see you here. This was explained last week at http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/144729.html#144741
Shepherd Woman, as Ulli says these are S.V. rules. Many stateside breeders follow this naming convention as well in order to simplify the recordkeeping.

We followed the same naming convention. We also let people pick names if they started with the correct letter. Some have different call names then registered. As Ulli said, the dogs don't care.

I am good friends with the couple that bred my pup. He is a riot with a very twisted sense of humor. She is a laid back and "normal". I think she is probably the only normal person I know.
My pup was out of the V litter. I was so worried he (my friend) would name him Vasectomy Venereal or any number of other untoward names. This is a man who would love to tell the story if someone saw this dog's name.
But he is a professional breeder and surely he would not want that with his kennel name on it. So I picked the name Vanda and call the "normal" one and she said she would make sure of the name for me.
Sheesh. Why can't I have more normal friends? Maybe because they're not as fun.
