GSDNewbie

by GSDNewbie on 10 September 2004 - 06:09

I have only recently joined. While reading the message archives, I learned alot on them and have enjoyed several threads. I am learning about working, showing and loving the breed. I used to read how others here loved GSDS. If I had read the crud I have read in the last two weeks, I never would have returned. I want to learn, and have met some knowlegable wonderful folks here who have answered my questions providing insight generously. I also see where some members seem to want to pick apart anything anyone says and it's not even to defend themselves. Can't we talk dogs again? Let's leave the schoolyard antics in the age it is expected and act like responsible intelligent folks with a common goal in supporting and improving GSDS? I just want to learn and I mean about the dogs and showing. I don't want to learn why he said she said but oh you know who said! Thanks for your moment of time. Hopefully this board will return to the informitive and helpful site that whoever created it's treasue of information intended it to have for all who needs and can share. Yvonne Brown

This board used to be informative and a wonderful place to find answers to questions as the knowledge base is tremendous. The members were curtious and very willing to help the newbie learn about this outstanding breed. Right now you have to go back a long way to find an intelligent post that is not rude, name calling, threatening, or defensive. WOW, inpress me. This board has so much to offer with a database of info that is unparalleled anywhere else. It is being ruined by posts that have nothing to do with the dog. I used to be here daily enjoying the amount of information and intelligence exhibited by the members but not anymore. It has been taken over by newbies who have something to prove, that they are IDIOTS. The GSD possesses the fight drive exhibited here on this board but it also exhibits the intelligence to know when not to. Obviously a few humans need to take notice. Jan ;-)

Yes I am a newbie obviously but I am trying to learn not act like I know it all? I am basically asking for all who have the experience to share. I am not trying to prove anything or be an "idiot" I don't think you meant folks like me and won't take it as such. Just adressing generallized comments, when they hurt another's feelings it causes alot of this conflict. Let's try to leave off the name calling and personal opinions and talk some dogs? I want to learn more about the sv how it all works to show and train the pup i am purchassing. I would love to find somone near me to train with and learn from, as a newbie associating with folks who are experienced is a bit intimidating and scary to begin with! Can we start out with basics describing how to start out? I think a great many would love to post their ways and let others read them and choose among them what they feel is right for their own dogs. Please though let's not attack any info that is posted as they are all opinions your own intelligence and common sense will weed out bad advices.

GSDNewbie, do you have no one that can help you? How did you purchase your pup? Will the breeder not support your efforts? Where are you located geographically? What are you interested in doing with your dog? There are many references that will give you a good background before even getting the pup. Sunshine

I've worked dogs just never shown confirmation, I have trained with schutzhund group for working my dogs SAR. I moved away from my home state and don't have any contacts or anyone near me in my new area of PA. The last five years I took care of my parents and pretty much stopped doing anything. Now I am looking to do somthing I always wished and that is hopfully training and showing my GSD. I am located near MD, WV, and VA. The breeder I am purchasing my puppy from lives far from me, but I wanted a pup from her litter. She has been wonderful and has answered my questions and I am sure she would be of some future help. However she is a very busy woman and very far from me and I am looking for group near me that would not consider me an intrusion. Of course the pup may not mature as I think and hope. But everyone faces that and I know it can happen. I am not looking to start up a kennel or make money I love the dogs and working them. I know absolutly nothing of the show ring but I do know dogs. Worked with them ever since I was fourteen and started out in first training kennel. I have looked online and its easy to find every kind of breeder under the sun and trainers willing to train your dogs, but I have not yet found a club or anyone near me for me to train my dog with. I am in it for the love and joy of working with my dog not paying sombody to do this. I have confidence in the litter I chose from after searching and learning. I have the pick of that litter and I plan on enjoying her no matter what we end up doing. If anyone has a contact for me I very much would appreciate it and even if anyone just wants to discuss issues and ideas thats great too! Somone mentioned a while back that there is a place on here to post pup pics?

I have a wonderful event for you to participate tomorrow morning in Easton, MD -- a Schutzhund seminar given by a top international trainer. Even if you came late, ask for sunshine and perhaps we can assist you for your area in more than one way. If you are interested, let me know immediately how to contact you and I will give you the details. Just from a well - meaning and similar minded lover of the GSD.

Welcome Yvonne, just kinda skip over the threads with titles that dont appeal to you. Unfortunately good topics do tend to have some folks that just enjoy banter and challenge.. just skip over them. when you see their names, just pretend you didnt see them no matter how hard they try to bait you. Thats what i decided to do, just last night :) These online BB can be very beneficial. Gotta be careful at times, as you dont really know how accurate info can be.. just feel free to ask others whose opinions you tend to respect... This BB particular is probably the most awesome with the pedigree database and the members are world wide :) Its great to have mentors, perhaps at your local club or friends of a friend etc... Regards, Dawnmarie
