Ceph

by Ceph on 08 November 2007 - 16:11

Hey all -

Its my birthday and I just came into some book money, and I was looking at treating myself to some SchH books.  Any suggestions on good ones?  I saw Ivan Balabanov's Book : Advanced Schutzhund and I also saw Schutzhund, Theory and training methods...any suggestions on which one of these might be better, or a book that is better than these two?

Thanks a bunch

Get Ivan's book with the DVD's.  Absolutely wonderful and a real eye opener.

My favorite book of all-time is out of print and very difficult to find. Its called "TOP Working Dogs" by Dietmar Schellenburg (sp?) It was a paperback book with very fine print, expensive even in the 80'2 at $25. + shipping, but had the best explanation of tracking and the dog's olfactory abilities I have ever seen. I sure wish I had never loaned it out. If you find a copy or two for sale, please let me know!

Yes all the titles mentioned in this thread are available at Amazon. Der Schutzhund is also a very good translation of the original German Work. available at www.leerburg.com

Cool. Next time I get a few bucks to spend frivolously I'll order another copy, maybe two.

Beside the obvious SchH books, look up Karen Pryor's books.  Behavior s[ecialist.  Sometimes it is nice to know why we do the things we do.  The more you understand the dog, the more your approach to training will become effective.

The Ivan DVD's are great if you can afford the expense.

I think I am going to go for the DVD after this weekend - the other wonderful thing about this week is I just took out my pre-commissioning loan...that was a pretty sweet bday gift to myself :p

I've read some of Karen Pryors work - she helped to put together the curriculum for the obedience certification program that I did....mostly her clicker things.  I really liked her stuff...I also hae the purely positive training by Sheila booth which I liked as well.

I like training books in general...I am trying to learn alot right now...I just dont really have any SchH books yet...and I have been in the sport about 2 months.

Susan Barwigs book is better to start with as a beginner   then move on to the Ivans   books    His are after you get into schutzhund.....this is Trainers   suggestion....read the susan and others first   and then go to Ivans books.....

Also   the clicker Training method , magazine gives you a list of other good training books   using the CLicker method , also.....which my trainers , both Adrian and Tom use...
