Shepherd Woman

Man, my Chaos, just can't win these days!!!!!! So I get home today and let the dogs out to go potty. I always kind of watch to make sure the 2 don't start scrapping. Chaos is out their doing his business and looks like he's having a hard time. He finally goes, and then starts licking back there right away! I call them all in side, and corral him to get a look at what is upsetting him. I lift his tail, and around it's swollen and red almost like a cyst kind of. It's around 4:45 when I find this. I called my vet asap and talked to them to see what they have to say. They had me run in and get a cone so I can stop him from messing with it until I can get him in tomorrow. They also told me to put very warm compresses on it every hour or 2, and that it will make it feel better. I did it right after I got home, and then asked my husband to do it while I was gone for a few hours tonight. Wellll, I get home, and lift his tail to get a look and it almost looks like it has been bleeding somewhat! I asked my husband if he had done what I asked and he said yes, once! I feel so bad for Chaos. Nothing is going his way. I wish we could go at least a while without something going wrong with him!!!!!! I am going to crate him while I'm at work tomorrow. I'm getting off early to get him to the vet. Any suggestions to make him more comfortable??? Man I feel bad for him.

Dang, no one has ever had a infected anal gland before?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

SW,  the only time I ever hear of it was a friend of mine,  she applied some cortizone creme to help ease the itching burning sensation....

I'm so sorry I wish I had something more to give to you,  BUT I have never had a dog with that condition,  NOR have I seen one at the shelter either.....  Poor thing,  I'm so sorry you and your Chaos are going through so many irritations.... Well hopefully things will go well at the vet and chaos will be back to spiffy in no time !!   Good Luck ,  I'm sorry I don't have anything other info to offer you...  My best to you.

Shepherd Woman:

I'm having a similar problem myself.  My female has had difficulty as well recently.  The area under her tail is discolored and slightly swollen.  She'd run into the house and immediately try to sit down in a weird motion which prompted me to lift her tail and investigate the area. The vet had given us some cream when we had a similiar problem in the past (I believe it's called Animax).  Hopefully, that will clear up our problem.

Please let us know how Chaos turns out.  Poor fella!

Ziegenfarm -

Thanks for the link.  Scary stuff!  The more I read about perianal fistulas on the Internet; the less I wanted to know.

Hi.  Yep, he is doing pretty good.  I took him to the vet and they said that I was right.  It is a infected anal gland.  He is on CPC an antibiotic for 10 days.  3 pills 3 times a day.  90 in all!  And I have to continue doing the very hot compresses on his little butt!  Poor guy.  It is getting all of the infection out though, very nicely.  It's not a huge cyst type thing any more.  It opened up and all drained out.  I have to take him back next Friday for a recheck.  I can't take him to the groomer this next week for his appointment, and can't do the dog show next weekend : - {  Sucks, because I'm having withdrawls, LOL.  But he is in great spirits and isn't fussing with it any more like he was at first.  Thanks so much for asking about him.  He says WOOF : - }}}}

glad to hear chaos is better; angus once had a "stopped up" gland too, but it didn't get swollen. he also had a bout of pano at the same time. he started walking like a mexican charro's horse - very upright with short, choppy steps. got him into the vets fast. they kept him for a couple hours. during that time, he peed on them, barfed on them and gooped them up with anal gland glop. its amazing that they still love it when he comes to the clinic! i just came back today with more pills to fight off infection from a cyst-like blob filled with really gross stuff! like a giant zit! NOT a tumor thank god, but now i have to watch to see if it was from an infection from some kind of puncture (thorn, etc) or if a cyst comes back. plus, it looks like he's got pano again. so, i've gotta watch over that.....i'd like to catch a break too. poor dogs....poor us.(and i mean that in many ways, including financially!),......AND it's too early to have a glass of wine......boo hoooo......

angus is lucky - only 2 pills twice a day! give your dog a hug for me.......
