I can remember a little over 10yrs ago, it seemed there were two types of GSD people, in my area anyway. There were the "WF" With Fero people, and there were the "WOF" Without Fero people. The "WF" people were those who had dogs off of or closely down from V Fero vom Zeuterner Himmelreich. These people couldn't hear or talk enough of Fero. The "WOF" people would get upset at the very mention of Fero, unless the discussion was about some inferior dog out of him. I had a grandson of Fero, but many had direct offspring from the dog.
Now, over ten years later, I see some peds with Fero generations back. This tells me that people breed their dogs a lot, and way too much. It also tells me that we humans all tend to suffer from the "grass is greener" Syndrome, and that we are a fickle bunch. It seems we will jump from one band wagon to another in a heartbeat.
What dog is the current "Flavor of the Month"? Do you have anything out of him?

actually you can take this one step further,, i have seen more and more ads that say
"fero and mink free"
seems to be a matter of opinion. i have dogs that have both, but like you said a few gens back
i see the current flavor of the month as
1 -anything czech
2- Falk von den Wolfen
my flavor is Troll von Haus Milinda, Asko, Aly,

My new dog is Fero and Mink free out of Falk vd Wolfen lines. I think the hot kennel is Saltzblick, lot of top dogs coming out of there.

The Fero was one of the most exciting dogs to watch and also one of the most overused stud dogs in the history of the GSD. He was not known for producing excellent hip quality and heavy and strong bones, but his behaviour during a protection test could be best described as "psycho" because of his extreme drive and focus. I own a Fero grandaughter and must say that she is the best bitch that I have ever owned, and even she has that strong civil drive as well as the high-pitched chattering yelp that the Fero would make when he was locked in drive.
The Fero produced several famous sons as well, and these went on to be used heavily as was their father. We nowadays see distinct bottlenecks in the two (2) distinct lines. For the working-line dogs we see the heavy imprint of the Fero, and for the show-line dogs we now see the heavy imprint of the VA-1 x 2 Ursus Batu that will no doubt be followed by his best son-the VA-1 x 2 Yasko Farbenspiel. Fresh blood must be introduced lest these genetic bottlenecks continue, and continue to affect the health and longevity of the breed.
This post brings to mind one of my favourite dogs of all times-the VA-5 Lasso di val Sol. The Lasso was so heavily used for breeding twenty (20) years ago that he is virtually impossible to avoid. He did produce many nice sons and daughters, but was also known to produce a fault-short front legs. Fortunately nowadays he is very far away in the pedigrees but the same could not be said fifteen (15) to twenty (20) years ago.
Generally, the purpose of producing and advertising Fero-free (or Troll-free or Timmy-free) stock is so we can maintain a bit of genetic diversity and dilute the faults caused by the overuse of Fero and any other heavily-used male. They were all great dogs.
Best Regards,
