Hi Guys,
Anybody here what is the minimum of age for breeding a male dog? I know in Germany the dog has to be two years old but in our country the minimum is one year old. What are the pros and cons of breeding a dog under two years old? I have a new male import who is 14 month old and some of my friends want to mate my dog to their bitches. I am quite new in the GSD world and don't have that much idea especially when it comes to breeding. What will happen to a young dog who starts breeding earlier? Can it be possiblly the dog will not develop his full potential to be a show dog? Ig anybody here can share some ideas I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

It is more that potential health problems have not had time to reveal themselves. Plus, at 14 months you will not have had hip certifications done, or probably any titles on your boy. Be patient, get his hips certified, some titles on him before you even think about breeding.

Actually, in Germany, the dog must be koered, titled, and hip rated also. I'd recommend the same for yours AND your friends dogs.

Ah okay actually he already has his hip certification done, fast normal.

Wouldn't that be a prelim at 14 months? Why the rush to breed anyway?

Um, no germany you can get a rating at 12 months which is where the fast normal comes in. Prelims are typically done in the US.

OK thanks for the clarification.

"12 which is where fast normal comes in"
Of all the misinformation and idiocy posted on this board! Angela are you having a brain strike out? FN has nothing to do with a dog being 12 months old. Hip ratings in Germany are A1 or a normal, A2 or a fast normal, A3 or NZ. these are ratings on hip conformation, and dogs being 12 months or 32 months do not mean they automatically get a different rating. I am hoping you just missed a sentence somewhere, because I would think you do know better.
