hai everybody,

what's idealbreeding?  Line breeding or outbreeding or inbreeding?  and how far one should go for linebreeding?  what characters must be given a second thought about linebreeding and disadvantages over advantages?

regards,

smartboy

first - look at your males pedigree and find his relatives, look at what his father and mother produced - meaning, what lines were they crossed with, what linebreedings done?  find out what each part of his pedigree is expressed in him.  then decide what possitives he expresses you want to pass on and reinforce.  Then find a female from lines that go with his lines demonstrated by other litters wtih that breeding combination. Then you have to find a female who has the same good points as him, and is stronger in the areas he is not strong in.

this is not a reseach project for a few hours, and if you really want to learn about breeding, not just have pups from your male because he is yours and you love him, then you need to really research like this, and go and see alot of other dogs to see if you really think your male is breeding quality.

An idea breeding is when you breed two dogs, and the offspring can:

Bringst a dumbell over tall buildings with a single bound.

Not only good with the kids, but diapers the baby, feeds the kids supper, and gives you the scoop on what your teenager is up to with her boyfriend by listening with doggie hypersensitive hearing when she's gossiping on the phone.

Is not only super at biting the sleeve, but can explain the technique to the newbie dogs in after-training sessions.

Some of the pups became police dogs and are known not only to be able to dodge bullets, but catch them in their teeth.

And the most incredible trait of all:

Has all the conformation of an excellent GSD that can be agreed upon by both working and showline people!

Sorry Smarty...I just couldn't resist! I am sure someone will give you better answers than me, LOL.~ Veronica

I think what you re looking for as an answer kinda got lost in the do-not-ever-breed-maniacs answers. LOL An ideal breeding is personal. It is what YOU consider to be the best possible dogs, and it is not determined beforehand. You can plan all you want, but might still get shit. As far as HOW to breed, Most people only linebreed lightly, as there are so many genetically undesirable recessives in the GSD. If you had the guts to do it, then really tight linebreeding on genetically sound dogs would produce what most would call "ideal" that is to say that the pups would be almost all alike.

I'd have to agree with Drew as this being the best place to get started is by researching your own dogs and their backgrounds.  Then I'd ad a check list of the pro's and con's weighing them both out before you make your final decission.

In a perfect world an ideal breeding would be one that not only looks good on paper but looks good in the flesh actually doing the work.
