That first dog look like a Malinois cross to me! The red coloring is very common in mals and the structure of the body looks just like a mal, the head looks a little odd, but I would bet it's a mal mix of some sort!

the first dog looks more like an Akita type, but not. It has to be of oriante origin.

The first one could easily be a very badly bred shepherd or could be crossed w/ a Dutchie, Mal, Dobe or a few others. The 2nd looks to have Chow in the head.
The reality about shelters and most rescue groups is they ahve no clue about breeds and what they are like. They often put a name to a dog because that is something the public wants - such as a GSD. If it has 2 prick ears they call it a GSd. The one exception to this is long coat GSD. They are almost always listed as collie crosses ( right in a way just off by about a 100 years).
The best to date I've seen was during the Katrina rescue efforts. A friend had taken in a Katrina GSD and put her up on the petfinder section for Katrina dogs. I went out to try to look at her picture and couldn't find the listing so put in the search term "german shepherd". Oi vey - hundreds if not a thousand or more dogs came up - most some sort of mix or the other but usually ( not always) w/ prick ears. But the jackpot went to the Chihuahua - yes folks looked like a purebred to me- happily listed as a GSD. Now I know they are dog with big attitudes and spirits but....

The second dog looks to me like a Smooth Coated Collie Mix. Of course it does say Mutt under German Shepherd. However, without DNA, we can not know what they are. i have seen pure GSD's that come in with papers that I would NEVER have guessed were purebred as and vice versa. We had two GSD/Chow/Rotti pups that came to our clinic, both looked as pure as their mom but they knew the dad was a Chow/Rotti mix. I think they could fool any Judge out there.

first link on first post to this thread, a collie mix (smooth coated collie) for sure. The mask and facial structure tells that story to me. I wouldn't say "GSD" at all. More likely smooth collie X - something else.

from second post - second dog is the same - smooth collie mix. First one, from the coloring and facial structure from what I can see - Chow X ??? maybe GSD X Chow.

I vote Akita cross on the first and Collie on the second, although could be, not necessarily smooth, depends on what it's mixed with.

it's a dog. if the parents are mixed and their parents are mixed and their parents are mixed the representational DNA pairs are now free form and no longer represent any definable pure breed. it is almost entirely speculation. as to the answer to the original post topic "What the heck is this?" It does indeed appear to be a canine
