Renofan2

by Renofan2 on 25 October 2007 - 01:10

I had Falon spayed today and brought her home a few hours ago.  They put the cone on her to stop her from licking or chewing her stiches.  She is whining alot and pacing banging into everything.  I cannot figure out if she is in pain or if she is bothered by the cone.  She will lay down for a few minutes, but has not fallen asleep yet.  They gave me pain killers to give her starting tomorrow morning.  The incision looks clean, no bleeding.  Is there anything I should look out for?  Anyone have any suggestions to make her more comfortable?  Most likely she is just being my spoiled baby, but it is hard to listen to her cry.

She just had surgery,of course she's in pain. Did the vet give you pain medicine or at least acepromazine?

Not a expert but watch for signs of any swelling. You might be better off keeping her crated up tonight so she can't be hurting herself.

I have only had one girl have  surgery (she ate a towel) and we had to enter her stomach with 7 different incisions to get it all out. She stayed at the vets all night and came home the following afternoon and acted like her normal high drive self and never had a problem so I do not know how she acted the first 24 hours.

I know this is not much help but good luck tonite.

why can't you give the pain killers tonight? Normally aspirin would be good to give but post op, not a good idea because it increases the chance of bleeding.

That's what I was thinking about but I do know after my girls surgery they had her on medications and while awake she just laid down but was not whining in pain. Not sure now how often that time they gave her additional pain medication.

Can you call your vet tonite?

They gave me Dermaxx 100 mg - told me to give her 1 1/4  tablet per day starting tomorrow morning for 4 days.  South Texan - thanks for the advice.  I checked for swelling and there isn't any, so that is good.  I will just continue to baby her tonight and keep a close eye on her.

I will give her the pills tonight as I think whatever they gave her earlier is not strong enough.  I don't remember Libby whining that much when she was spayed, so maybe Falon just needs a little stronger pain meds.

Actually I agree and likely what I would do. Did the medication come with any paperwork with suggested dosages?

Start the drug tonight, Deramaxx is a once a day medication so just make sure you continue giving it in the evening.  Personally, I like females to be on the drug for at least 7 days, it helps keep swelling down around the incision.  The cone is probably bothering her as well, as long as you directly supervise her you can remove it, just make sure you put it right back on whenever you cant be right there with her, they can do damage pretty quickly without those darn things.  A nice quiet, dark room would be nice for her so she can sleep off the rest of the anesthesia without too much stimulation.  If you have never had a dog with a cone before, be prepared for bruises on the back of your legs around the knee area, lol!

VBK9:  Thanks for the advice.  I have started the deramax tonight and put her in my bedroom away from the other dogs.  I will also call the vet and pick up a few more days of pills based on your suggestion of giving it to her for 7 days.  I agree with you that the cone is bothering her and yes, I have discovered pretty quickly the pain it can cause us humans, lol.
