I have a bitch who will be 2.5 yrs old this coming December. The last time she had her heat period was in late April or early May. The problem is i wasn't able to breed her because she doesn't want to be bred. I don't think it has anything to do with the wrong day because I have a male beside her and I tried to breed them everyday but the female just refuses until her heat period was gone. I am expecting her to come into heat anytime soon so I just want some advice to people who have encounter this kind of situation. Any suggerstions on what to do on her next cycle would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not a breeder but I can tell you that I've heard stories from many who've bred dogs and your dilema is not unusual. It happens sometimes that the female or even sometimes the male is not interested. Have you had her checked out by the vet to make sure there's nothing medically wrong? I'm sure she's probably healthy but I would get her checked out before you make yourself crazy trying to figure out why she's not interested. You may have to have her impregnated at the vets office with injecting her with the seman if you want to breed her and it's not happening the natural way.
When she is in heat does your male go crazy? Is he interested in her to the point he gives you the sign that you're timing it right? How does she react when he approaches her?

Females will not be bleeding heavily when they are ready to breed so you may just think she's out of heat. She may have a slight dark red discharge or no discharge at all. Progesterone testing is the best way to go so that you know exactly when she's ready to be bred. They're all different and nobody can tell you the exact day she'll be ready. If she's flagging and standing for him, then she's ready.

Is the male dog ugly? LOL. Just a thought. Maybe he isn't her type though. Some GSD's are cute and some are very ugly! They can also tell the difference, just like you and I !!!!! Try a different male is my suggestion!

Are you serious? C'mon now.....give them an artificial vagina and they'll be in love.

The Proestrus is the beginning of the Estrus Cycle. During this period the bitch has a hostile attitude toward males. At the end of the Proestrus her attitude changes and she becomes interested in males. The average Proestrus is about 9 days. The best time to breed is about 24 to 48 hrs after Ovulation, and Ovulation usually begins 9 to 12 days after the first sign of blood.
When the bitch is ready, she will Flag (puts her tail aside and extends her vulva). Your DVM has an inexpensive vaginal smear test to determine the Ovulation in your bitch.
Even if a bitch doesn't like a male, if she is held and is in Ovulation, she will flag. Nature wins out. Of course you may need another person to hold her and guide the male, in order to get the job done.

Before the Michael Vick incident, breeding stands (Rape Stands) were for sale all over the net. Then all of a sudden they all vanished. Breeding Stands are used for for a bitch who is difficult to breed.

Some of my friends told me to force the bitch but I don't want that. When the male starts to romp she'll just move away and keep on play biting to my male.

Might be she is just not ready yet. Years ago some friends kept trying to get their Rottie female bred. They did all the vet tests and did AI's. No pups. Finally they left her with a male and it was after 20 days she stood and had a litter. Maybe a split heat who knows. Nature can be a funny thing. Does she stand for him to mount and flag? Another friend just had a maiden female in for breeding and her male who is experienced was having a hard time. I suggested she use a little vaseline. Guess what.... got the job done lickity split. But this female would stand and flag.

Friend of mine took her female to a kennel that had a few nice males. The Stud they wanted to use the bitch wanted nothing to do with. Brought out a different stud and she was flagging and standing. If there is noting medically wrong with your bitch, you might want to see how she reacts to a different male.
