This ad says that this dog will improve pigment, but he has a white patch on his chest. The white patch doesn't have anything to do with his pigment? I really don't like to see white patches on dogs.

Watson,

Quax is an extremely well pigmented dog as can be readily seen. While white patches are undesireable, they are unrelated to pigment fading or receding faults. I do not know what you could mean by "showliners", but have heard many working line people claim unequivocally that their pale washed out grey sable is a pigment improver. This is simply not the case. I too am put off by the white spotting seen on seemingly more dogs today, but would breed to Quax based on his excellent type, structure, temperament, and color. Best Wishes, Jonah

"but have heard many working line people claim unequivocally that their pale washed out grey sable is a pigment improver."

Well thank goodness not all working line enthusiasts subscribe to such philosophies!

However, pigment is such a cosmetic feature.... wasn't it Max who said "Beautiful is what serves a purpose"?  The white spot is moot, as well as his fluffy mahogany coat.  Talk to me about his working abilities.

That is a beautiful dog. But am I the only one who noticed the white toes on his right hind foot.

I am interested to read this thread as we have had so many opinions given to us over the white patches on our new additon pup showlines puppy already. Some have said they wouldn't choose a puppy with white spotting yet others have said its no big deal  and wouldn't stop them from purchasing a good pup..Our pup has a spot of white on her chest and on one toe but It is already diminishing ..She is by no means poorly pigmented, she also a  lovley rich red colour and  has dark eyes to die for,.In my opinion her pigment is most definitely good and her colour too increasing in depth as she ages..

Yes that was a bad title. Maybe I should have just asked is the gene for white patches goes along with the pigment gene. And, can a dog with white patches go on to produce a totally white do or is that still another gene. And lastly, how much white patching is allows before the dog is tremed a panda.

I do not like the white, but that is a nice puppy. And I seen that the paw with the white has black toe nails. I usually see white paws with transparent toenails in most dogs.

thanks watongsd..I am glad you started this thread I am keen to hear more opinions on the white patches seen on some sheps especially as we have one .... and yes your right  her toenailils are black despite the white fur :) Since the last photo the white is even less on her toe ..I think there will be little sign of it when she is mature..??

That white may very well disappear with the puppy's adult coat. Happens all the time, especially when the toenails are black.
