Hey all, I know this might be a long shot, and I wish I had thought about it before. Back in April of 2005, a very good friend and her husband were on their way back from vacation from Texas to Michigan. They stopped at the Flying J Truck Stop in New Caney, TX to eat breakfast. When they opened their camper door, their GSD, Heidi flew out and ran after something. They called and called and could not find her. Heidi was 3 years old at the time, so she would be 5 now. She was about 70 lbs. then. Don't know what she would be now. She had a maroon collar on, but also had a pinch collar on for health reasons to handle her {the owner} She is microchipped, and had all of her tags on her collar also. She is a black and tan. One lazy ear {all the time} We contacted every single vet etc, and dog pound to no avail. We are thinking that someone picked her up, and because of the pinch collar thought that the owner was being cruel and did not want to try to attempt to find the owner. She is a very friendly dog and would go with anyone! Have any of you seen her or know of her wearabouts?

Did you by chance call the microchip database? If she was picked up and surrendered to a shelter etc they would have automatically scanned her for a chip and notified the database which would still have records of it. Also, when you contacted the vets and ALWAYS contact grooming shops ( we usually get them in for a bath because the new owners think the dog is stinky)did you give them the chip number and the dog description? Up in my area ( 20 miles or so N of where your dog went missing) We have finally educated the vets that when they recieve a missing pet, and get a new client matching the description, they scan for a chip. 1 of our vet automatically scan all new clients for a microchip.
There is a rescue outfit out that way, Twilla's friends I think is the name of it. Go up on petfinders, www.petfinder.com and do a search for rescue groups in the areea, If you like, use the zip code 77351 and since Twillas is within 50 miles of me it should pull the rescue up.
There are also several rescues in ColdSprings but the main one recently split into 2 groups so I think you will run into a dead end there. For the most part, rescues keep good records on their rescues and adoptions, you just might be able to find out the final disposition of the dog if nothing else. After all this time tho, I would get my hopes up that the dog will be returned. I would also contact Houston Humane and Houston SPCA. Most of the rural rescues at one time or another, when they get overloaded will take pets there to get adopted out.
Good Luck and I hope this info helps, All of my pups are being adopted Microchipped. If they ever disappear, they will always notify me since I am the chipper :)

I'm not sure if Denise called the microchip place. I will ask her at work tomorrow. She has gotten 2 GSD's since Heidi came up missing so now she has 3 dogs. She has said a few times that even if Heidi was found, she didn't know what she would do with 4 dogs. She lives right in town and I believe the limit is 3. She also said that she hopes that if someone has her, she hopes they are taking good care of her and love her as much as she and Nick did. I hope so too!
