I was talking recently to someone who wanted "help" in training her dalmation. she is a rather heavy handed person but the dog is pretty dominant too, so I figured they belong together. Anyway she mentioned once, "this dog WILL obey me, WHEN I give a command and ONLY when I give a command." and that is a quote. She stated that she trained the dog for a minimum of 3 hours each day and what more should she be doing. My response was, "have you ever considered vacation? Or how about simply playing with the dog for 45 min and calling it good for the day." Clearly she didn't like my answer but I got to wondering what other people do as a "training schedule"
What do you all do for general training work as a day to day schedule?
thanks

Personally for me and my dogs
young 6 month old about 15 minutes of training and 45 minutes of play /inprinting
older adult about 20-30 minutes of different routes 10/15min. obedience, 10/15 minutes of bite work and then play time /learning
or if the day is tracking then all the time is tracking 20-30 minutes with play time
I guess the best way to put it is this a BH or CD might take all of 10-15 mintues that is how long your obedience should be
Dogs get bored and tired of obedience mix it up go for walks and add sits , downs and stands in the walk
do some playing witht the ball and add a down or a stand or sit mix it up
But over all have fun
She sounds like me years ago (koeler method of training) diferent dogs need diferent methods and you learn the easy way or the expenisive way!!!!!!!!!

For my 6 mo pup we do 15-20 minutes a day sometimes twice a day depending on the weather and his mood. We'll incorporate some play so he doesn't lose interest or get frustrated. My older dog typically is "working" all the time, even in the house he gets his obedience in. Bitework he does every Sunday unless we have prior committments with the family. I guess it really depends on each individual dog and what your situation is. Those that train on a morecompetive and serious level spend hours on end each week training; others that do it just for enjoyment and more of a hobby train less and at their leisure. I'd say 3 hours a day is a bit over the top though. lol I wish I had that much time in a day to myself. lol

I usually only train strictly with my 8 month old puppy for about ten minutes a day, however during my walks (about 30 minutes per day) I encoporate training as mentioned by EKvonEarnhardt and when playing with his tug toy or with a ball I do some basic trainingas well.
In my opinion the best way to train is while doing a more enjoyable game! Otherwise he loses interest after such a short time.
But if you think about it, you are actually teaching your dog basic "manners" with everything you do with him.
And I also wanted to know, do you all teach bitework? And does this affect his temperament with other dogs and children etc...?
