Is it my eyes, or perhaps an overexposed picture quality or is this puppy a red & tan rather than black & tan?

I have seen black puppy  coats go red as they start shedding.  Saw one pure black you would have sworn was all red, she wasn't....  Turned out a beautiful solid shine black color after she finished shedding out.  The exposure looks funny too.

This puppy is not a sable. He will be a black and tan/red. It looks like he won't have many black markings though, if he is already that tan around the head.

Sue, I think that the photo is over exposed. Plus, some puppies do not have an intense black color. These are the ones with less black markings.

liver and tan maybe

Just a very bright picture in front of sunny window.

Looks like a tan and black, maybe with red highlights in tan later.

Puppies go through more than one coat.

I think you guys are right, the exposure is wrong, look at how everything in the background turns pale & white.  And now that I think of it, many years ago, I had a very dark - almost bi-color b & t, and his puppy coat did turn almost rusty right before he shed it out for his adult coat, just as Animules mentioned.  I think what threw me too, was the large amount of brown/tan on his head & ears.  Oh well, in the immortal words of SNL's  Roseanne Roseanna Dannna,   "Never Mind".

I would tend to disagree with the overexposure thing.  the man's hair is black and appears black, the tire on the bike is black and appears black, and the muzzle on the pup is black and appears considerably darker than the bodypiece.  I agree with EK, this is a liver.
