Every dog must have a soul
Somewhere deep inside
Where all his hurts and grievances
Are buried with his pride.
Where he decides the good and bad,
The wrong way from the right,
And where his judgement carefully
Is hidden from our sight.
A dog must have a secret place
Where every thought abides,
A sort of close acquaintance that
He trusts in and confides.
And when accused unjustly for
Himself, He cannot speak,
Rebuked, He finds within his soul
The comfort he must seek.
He'll love, tho'he is unloved,
And he'll serve tho'badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away
The times when he's abused.
Altho' his heart may break in two
His love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog
An understanding Soul!
My girl friend sent this to me when I told her how sad Beckett's been since I got hurt. I thought I would share it with you. jo

No, she said it was listed as anonymous when I asked her. My girl friend is EJ Heineman, the owner of Schumar's Shepherds, where I got my girl, Kali. She's always coming up with great poems and sayings about dogs, and our souls. She's a hospice nurse, like me, and is very spiritual. She gets some of it from her friend Charlotte, who owns Char-Will Shepherds, in New Ringold, Pa. They have West German showlines, and EJ has some American showlines; but she says "I don't pick a dog for my program because it has this lines or that line, I just like to see what each particular dog can do." She recently added a puppy from Shelley's breeding program to her kennel, from Shelley's 'C" litter. I feel so lucky to be able to count these folks as my friends.. joThese are A couple of EJ's young dogs having fun...
