you were in a car accident and your dogs were in your vehicle with you?? EMS would take you to a hospital and your family would be notified and they would rush to the hospital to be with you. But what would happen to your dogs in the car with you? I've made laminated instructions that I'm going to tape onto my new kennels in my car with specific instructions as to what to do. It goes something like this..

I am GUNNER
I belong to KW Police Officer ________
In case of emergency please call my trainer___ at____. If he cannot be reached please call the KWPD at______ and ask them to send a K9 Officer to get me.

Some of you may have already thought of this but I thought it was a really good idea to have some kind of plan for an emergency like this. You wouldn't want your dogs taken to the pound, and your family would be unable to do anything because they would be at the hospital (hopefully) with you.  Your vet info might be a good idea also.

it is also a good idea to have taped to the front of your home, you have dogs, and the information on them for fire fighters, emergency services.

That happened to my dog in 1977, my ex & our shepherd got in a car accident,
and the people in the other car, the driver's relatives took the dog overnight,
they were a very nice nice family, also cause the young driver was speeding
and caused the accident, they took the dog in.

Then, they returned the dog to me the next day, I kinda,
took it for granted that the people came forward & helped babysit the dog, I think
maybe he just had his license tag on him, boy I was lucky........

Things could have gone very differently...............

Excellent idea.  Good thinking for vehicle and house!  I'm getting mine together now.

Our County sends stickers for the doors/windows stating specifically how many pets are in the home for emergencies, they come with the licenses.  Mine is on the glass on my door.  I've thought about the accident scenario but never actually formulated a plan, GREAT IDEA policemom, thank you!!

boss hasnt gone anywhere in the car with me since he was a pup....dont go to many places where i can take dogs...but this coming thanksgiving, we are planning to make a trip to tennesse, and then on to virginia....and i do plan to bring boss with me.......this has me thinking that it sure is a long trip from here to go with no precautions.......if someting happened during this trip (god forbid)...none of my family or friends would pro worry at all about the dogs, or trying to go get them or find them for me....it's sad , i know, but none of them are really 'dog' people like i am....well except for one aunt that i will certianly list as a contact....but that far away? where would my dog end up untill she was able to get em?....

Another good idea is a pet emergency kit in your car. Wherever you take your dogs, a kit will be near. I also have one at home in the garage. I still need to figure out who gets my dogs if I should die. Nobody in my family could handle/enjoy Baden at this point. Any takers?

What exactly do you put in your emergency kit?  Of course, aside from the usual things in a PEOPLE emergency kit?  Extra collar/leash?  I have a fabric water bowl and I carry a gallon of water at all times.  I always carry a blanket in my car also but this is for any emergency, even one I'm not involved in.
