the paw thing.... - Page 1

boss has always loved to kinda paw me, not in a pushy way though, he just likes to put his paw on me when he sits by me.....he is perfectly content when i "hold his hand", yes, that is what it looks like....if im sitting in a chair, he is sitting on the ground by me and his paw is in my hand..and he likes me to 'rub' his paw..i would have just assumed it was just something "he" did, but his sister does the same thing....now im wondering if this is a GSD thing..? does anyone else have a GSD that does this? most dogs ive had, like my ratty's, cant stand to have their feet touched...

My female paws me just this way all the time.  I don't think it's a dominance thing.  She may be claiming me (she does it more when I am paying attention to another animal) or it may just be to get my attention.  I never noticed that she actually wanted me to do anything with her paw, but I will try to pay better attention next time.

Most of my GSD's have done this, some more than others. My Trick was a paw puppy, always offering his hand to me. Easy to teach them to shake or slap you 5. Kids love that.

Gotta be a GSD thing, every one I've had (5) always loved to use their paws.  Seems like we could probably teach them to play soccer, we could have a world class team!!

Kind of a dominance thing, they "make" you do what they want like pet them or hold hands.  Mine do it to and yes I give in. 

I think GS are very "paw-wy".  Actually, I've always called them "cat-like".  They seem to love to use paws like hands.  My last GS was very into using her paws to open things, turn over things, maneuver a ball just the right way under her, etc.  I don't think she did too much of the "paw on person" - some, of course - but she loved using her "hands" otherwise!  She even crossed her legs (front) alot, too, like a proper lady!  I have it on a photo of my family and our dogs and she's doing it there!

like bucko..I thought it might be a dominance thing. or that he was 'claiming me'......he seems to do it for that reason when we are around other people....but im glad no one thinks its a serious dominance thing.....lol...after posting i was worried everyone would start saying i better make him stop doing that.....

Ol'line rebel....so true...now knowing that its common in the breed, it only makes them seem that much smarter in my eyes...they know how to use more than their muzzel or barking to get what they want.....the way he paws me, when he wants attention, it doesnt necessarly seem like he's 'making' me , more like his way of saying "please".....atleast he doent stand there barking at me like my ratty's.......although my ratty roscoe, talks to me with his barks....ive had him almost ten years so i know his barks by now....ill ask if he wants outside, or if he wants water, or if he wants food....he will bark a certin way if i get it right, or he will give a liitle low growl if i get it wrong.....

Wow, I thought my boy just loved me kinda special like!!  He likes for me to scratch/rub underneath the paw and rub his forearms, he'll sit for an hour like that and when I rub it just right, he sets his ears back in a relaxed way and starts licking my arm back.  My female on the other hand - throws her paw at you and keeps doing it until it makes contact - she'll even go left, right, left, right until one lands in my palm, not for rubbing mind you, just to get her fun in.
