A pure breed GSD with dominant traits will have erect ears as early as 8 weeks.

Not exactly correct? - Some GSD's with bigger ears may take longer to go up.

Here is some helpful information:

what  great link Thanks Shtal

Benny's ears were both up great from 17- 18 weeks but them the left went down and now at 22 weeks is still down. He is a big boy, with big ears and teething. The breeder says they will come up as both his parents and all previous pups from them have gone up, but I am going to tape them anyway. He has been roughousing with our Pit Bull pup and this may have done some damage to tje ear, although they look fine

Many thanks for the link!

Actually Sky is rather arge in size like his sire

so that might explain why his ears are taking time, in addition to teething ofcourse.

OK, I am just telling you that you need to watch for health problems in a GSD that does not have erect ears early.  I have never had a GSD in 35 years with floppy ears at this age.  The ones I have seen with this issue often lacked drive, died early, and had many, many health problems.  Use all the IQ articles you want I am telling you from a practical perspective.  I have been around these dogs for a long time and love them dearly.  It does not mean they can't be a great pet just know what you have.

Are you talking about Show Line or Working Line GSD's.

Hi Campbell. My boy is 7 months old and his ears have only just decided to stay up,he had a terrible time teething,I know a GSD does not look as awsome as when his ears are up thats why i think we are always concerned when they are a little late standing up nice and strong especially if you show.My boy has big ears they look too big for his head at the moment,I think that may have been a factor but i know he will grow into them.I know its easy to say but be patient and good luck. Please keep us updated.

Now I am worried. Benny's right ear has been up since 12 weeks. They both did the teepee thing for awhile.  Then between 17- 18 weeks they were both
up good like the avatar, but then the left flopped. He is a big boy and teething so i was not worried. His parents have great ears and so do all the pups from a previous litter.  He is 5 months today.  The ear is the least of my worries. I don't want him to be sick and die young. He is my best friend.
His Dad,  is imported form Berlin and his mom American.
Here is his pedigree. There is no info on the mom here but I have it.  His grandparents omn both sides are  in the database.

Giving him bones and chew toys will help strengthen the muscles in his jaw, neck and ears as well.

Marrow bones are great for this and last a long time against those razor sharp puppy teeth.

I wouldn't start to worry at this age, it is very normal for a 3-4 month old puppy to have floppy ears, especially later on when they are teething.

OMG...
IT IS NORMAL for German Shepherd puppies of ALL bloodlines to have "floppy ears" during this stage in life.
The ear size, strength, teething, environment, temperment, blood line & pack "order" ALL play key elements in how & when your puppies ears will strengthen and remain erect.
Be careful that there are no "creases" in the ears, otherwise bloodflow does not circulate properly and it can cause the ear to remain weak, and possibly not stand correct.  In that case. I would suggest "forming" them, to prevent the crease from being permanent.
If puppies have erect ears at 8 weeks and remain erect.....GOD BLESS THEM!.....I've had only 50% of mine do that.
As for health reasons being affiliated with "floppy ears"...never heard of it....unless the puppy had an ear infection.
just my opinion,
Robin

If both ears are not by 6 months old you should consider finding someone reputable who can help you tape the one that is not up.   If you can find someone to do it right , it is very effective.  Also, I you didn't mention if he plays hard regularly with other pups or dogs.  But, that can knock the ears down too.
