Anyone of you guys... have experience with this type of GSD color... The breeder probably has working-lines... And I would just like to RULE-OUT the possibility... It was not crossed with a Belgian Mal... the working-lines...I know in this district are mostly not pedigreed... It they are most are just MANUFACTURED papers... Working-line folks in the area are so engrossed with the capabilities of their individual dogs... They don't anymore mind the standards...

There is such a color in GSD - I call it "red" but it might have a technical name - doesn't mean he isn't a mix.

Breeder claims it to be Brown Sable... ( thinking it is similar to RED Sable) born January of this year... making the pup almost / if not ...10 months old... I don't think its a sable because "SABLE" in Germany means DARK... Dark hairs overlaying the base hair ( BASE HAIR either Silver... Tan/Brown... to deep Red...) I have seen Sable pups grow... and at this age it should already have the Sableing (dark tipped hair...) only the Tail has Dark brown tips...
So I am thinking... It maybe similar to the Fawn with Black mask common in Belgian Mals... or that the pup has Fading BLACK... But still he has a nice good black mask and I hope the drives good also since comming from Working-lines.

I've seen this color once before. Technically, (I may be wrong here) I think it is a variation of the sable gene. Sable does not mean dark, it just means "agouti", which is a tipped hair. I would consider the mals as well to be sable, you can see it with some darker ones and also in the tuervs, which have more dark tipping.
You can see he still has his dark mask, which is on a different alele than the coat pattern.

I had one years ago that looked identical to this. Her name was Sheba. I got her from a farmer who raised gsd's on the side. The mother was a sable and the father was a black and tan. Some of the pups (litter of 8) were black and tan and some were this color. She was purebred and very drivey. Never knew what to call her color. They referred to her as a sable back then. That was in the early 80's.

It's has to be a cross. Probably the dam got got by more than one male. No way is it pure GSD. Tail, body, structure, muscle mass, head, ears and last but not least color, indicate a cross. Mutations do occur, but I doubt it in this case. Does it have black spots on the tongue?

Look at the front on pic of this pup again...looks pure show line to me. Perfect head, nice mask, nice red pigment, good bone. What does spots on the tongue have to do with anything? I vote he is pure, some what gangly with imaturity, just missing his black saddle is all. Tail is no indication of a pure GSD, they come in all sized and puffyness. Baden has a very thin tail for his body size as well and is only now at a year in age getting longer fur back there to make it appear thicker. How much muscle mass do do expect on a puppy?
She said it was of working lines, so I guess he isn't show but if he had the black saddle he would be a dead ringer for one to me. Pup swings to the smoother coat as does my pup, could thicken up some in time depending on what season the pic was taken. I see nothing wrong with the pup structure wise in these photos, nothing to indicate he is a mix, just missing a coat pattern.
Interesting dog, I have never seen this color before myself. Thanks for posting and I hope more people comment. If we painted him black sable he would pass for Boss and if we painted him blk/red not a saddle but blanket he would pass for my pup Baden at a younger age. Looks to be about 5-6 months in the pics, by my opinion anyway.

Yes Do right and fear no one... You maybe right... That's why I'm gettin ya all buds.. to help me out...
What do we call it.??? If it's a total Outcross.. for drives... A GerBel shepherd dog maybe... Bel-Ger sheep dog... I saw a nice looking Dark sable Mal... near my home, large built and big head.... the angulations hmm... poor for GSD standards... and the drive... a NO NO... no control and too noisy...
If this girl is an Outcross... bet cha it's a FAWN with Black mask MALLINOIS.... "Melachaar.."
