How do you go about cleaning your dog's teeth? Can I use a toothbrush and human toothpaste to clean his teeth? If not what other method and cleaning agent should I use for this purpose?

Thanks;

I give my dogs raw knuckle bones and let them go to town to clean their teeth but that's just me. I know you're not supposed to use human toothpaste if you DO decide to brush because human toothpaste should not be swallowed only you can't convince a dog of that. If you go that route, you have to get toothpaste made specifically for dogs....

LOL, I don't!   I let the chewing do the work and all their teeth are pretty good.  I can honestly say that I've NEVER brushed their teeth.  Though for some dogs you really need to.  I work at a vet and do dentals some of the dogs teeth, so I know how gross the teeth can get.

I give my dogs raw knuckle bones as well.  I also brush their teeth with a toothpaste that I purchased at my vet's office.  I purchased the large size tooth brush with 2 different ends at PetSmart.   They seem to like the taste of the toothpaste - it's chicken flavored.  I wouldn't use a human toothpaste as Shasta pointed out.

Shasta, I do the same, to many dogs to brush their teeth,
I'm lucky if I have the time to brush my own teeth!!

I take the time to trim nails, and clean the nooks & cranies in ears....

Although, I just got Theo's hips & elbows OFA'ed & while he was knocked out
I was picking at the  boys teeth & inspecting them......

Anyway, those beef marrow bones, clean teeth like you wouldn't
believe, I swear by them, and also the dogs are so content chewing
on them.

Blitz doesn't like to have his teeth brushed and I don't like to brush them although I do think it's a good idea to do that using a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste. Unfortunately, he gets diarrhea from knuckle bones and has broken the tips off 3 of his 4 canine from chewing on raw marrow bones, so now and then I need to scrape his canines and molars using a doggy tooth scraper. He's not crazy about that, but I do it anyway. He almost 6 and his teeth look pretty good.

My vet gave me a solution called "Clean & Fresh" by Bulter.  Its peppermint flavor.  Its a liquid that comes in a spray pump.  I use a finger toothbrush (for infants) or you can use a piece of gauze.  Spray it on the toothbrush or gauze and gently wipe.   3x a week.   My dogs love it.  I have 2 Cairn Terriers and a 10 month old GSD.  And their breath smell great
