CNN reported that an "evaluation committee" has decided that 47 of the 48 dogs confiscated in the Michael Vick dog fighting situation, have been cleared of aggression towards humans, and therefore do not have to be "put down". One dog is to be put down.  They further made the statement that the dogs could become pets or even police dogs.

I find this report incredible on so many fronts.

The police dog comment is open for discussion, but probably just an off hand comment and probably doesn't have much substance to it.

As for the 47 dogs not being put down, it makes me happy, but goes against every shelter or law enforcement theories I have ever experienced, except for "Pit Bull Rescue" groups.  Pits confiscated from dog fighting enterprises are almost always out down.

This is a good day for the dogs.

OF course, if they belonged to someone OTHER than Michael Vick, I'm fairly sure the verdict would have been quite different.

But yeah, a good day for the dogs....

Nice to know that they are deemed eligible to be family pets. That seems to speak well of that breed all things considered.

Most recues I know about do have a policy to not rehome Pits, they are all PTS which is a pretty stupid rule if you ask me. Since the insurance campanies govern every aspect of our lives now, I suspect they may have something to do with this saying the breed is not trustworthy and rehoming them puts the rescues in jeopardy of losing their coverage should they bite anyone.  The same reasoning that applies to breed bans in campgrounds.

Sunsilver is right.  There would of been no "panel" or going to court.  The dogs would of been euthanized if they were just taken away from any other dogfighter or drug dealer on the street.   I know that the major concern in Detroit is that they will just end up in the same abusive situation that they were just taken from.  Occasionally they will release them to a local Pit rescue but never to the public.  If this wasn't such a publicized case there would be no question.  Lord forbid the ASPCA should end up looking bad by putting these dogs down.

I have no personal problem with Pits and know several very sweet ones.  Would I want an ex-fighting dog living fence to fence with my dogs?  Nope.  I am happy for these dogs and I hope that they end up in responsible hands that will give them a good life without endangering other dogs.

DRAFNO,

One local person rescues and trains pits for police work.  There a few in the state patrol drug and bomb detection units, and doing quite well.
