yesterday, when i let boss out of his kennel, he started to jump on me...Ive been trying to break this habit by turning my back to him....well this time, when i turned, itmust have been right at a bad moment because i knocked him off balance somehow and he landed on his hip wrong, he let out a few yelps and held his leg funny, after a few seconds tho, he got up and was walking on it, favored it only for a few mins....after a while he walked on it normaly, was showing no signs of pain, maybe a slight favoring but that could just be me being paronoid, from what my hubby says....i worried and fussed about his leg all evening, i kept massaging it and checking for any signs of something wrong....my hubby says im overeacting, he says he thought we got a dog, not a piece of glass...lol..he thinks i baby him to much.....but i am wondering, even tho this was not a very hard fall, and he seems fine now, could i have ruined his hip by something so simple as this? will there be consquences down the road from this small fall? I just feel so guilty....

I think your GSD IS THE BABY! :))) LOL Actually, most show GSDs I've seen can be emotional about and are sensitive about their paws/legs anyway...a lot of times they'll yelp out if you barely step on a toe by mistake! Almost like they are offended. Ever have a dramatic child get barely nudged and yet they throw themselves on the floor like they narrowly escaped a freight train? Same kind of thing here - Now, I am not a vet, and if you think there is something wrong, go check it out, but GSDs are very hearty (assuming you have good lines that aren't dysplastic!) and I've seen them do exactly what you are talking about MANY times...it's kind of like a 2 yr old ...they are saying "OH! LOOK at what you've DONE to me - your CHILD!! Look at my BOO BOO!!! My finger has a heartbeat!!! I need a Bandaid!!" and then seconds later they are fine and off playing. Remember that they are very in-tune with their masters and are always a part of the pack and paying attention to being in and out of favor with the alpha and those higher up in the pack. I would keep an eye on him but he's probably fine! He probably just took it personally!

Bumps and bruises happen. The chances of this affecting long term are so slight as to be not worth the worry. More concern would be his racing up and down stairs and letting the wall stop his forward motion.

What would happens if that hip turns out bad? Will you tell the breeder what you did?

by 4pack on 01 October 2007 - 14:10
Why would she tell the breeder what she did DDR? She didn't pay for the dog it was a gift and she wont be sending it back. Lets not get snotty now.

iluvmygsd...How old is "Boss"...and is he working or showlines?...Maybe he won't jump up on you anymore...but what you did shouldn't have any affects on him...unless his hips are already less then desirable...Have you had his hips/elbows x-rayed yet?...

Why because environmental dysphasia is common and there are people who would have some thing like this happen and blame the breeding or the bloodline. That is one reason why many do not want to give a guarantee. It was not nasty just wanted to know if they are honest enough to tell them.

It can't be as bad as having your dog jammed a couple times by a bad helper...and Lord knows every SCH person has seen THAT happen more than once - UGH! Can't imagine running to the breeder and asking for a refund after a bad catch

by 4pack on 01 October 2007 - 14:10
I wouldn't say environmental factors in higher than genetics. If she is honest enough to ask on the board, why would she lie to the breeder after making it public? Boss is a pet and he was a gift, like I said he wont be returned to the breeder.

The environment does not cause HD. A poor environment and/or diet can make HD worse, but it's not going to cause it. Ultimately, it is the genes.
Iluvmy GSD is concerned about her dog and is asking if she could have damaged Boss's hip by pushing him away. Blitz screams like he's being killed if we accidentally step on one of his paws or his tail or if we even bump against him when he's laying down. I think some dogs are cry babies.
