I am looking at a male puppy. The message title sums it up. The pedigree is listed here.

The dog will be first and foremost a family companion and we will do recreational agility and tracking. Probably nothing in the official arena.
I have had Rotties and had one with moderate HD so I'm trying to be cautious.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I would think this litter will be fine, it's good to be cautious and i understand about the HD, boh my dogs have it. OFA Fair is still clear of HD, if you like the parents and the litter go for it, just make sure they have a guarrantee on hips, just in case. Parents with good hips can also produce HD dogs too.

I'd first try to find out about the hips of the siblings of the parents and if either the sire or the dam has had other litters and those results. I myself wouldn't walk away from a puppy just because one of the parent were an OFA fair. Sometimes OFA is inconsistent and the same dog could get a good or even an excellent with a different xray or a different team of OFA readers. A fair rating does not mean the dog is dysplastic, it only means that at least 2 of the 3 OFA readers saw some minor imperfections on the xray. Also, it might not be a well positioned or correctly exposed xray either. OFA does not alwasy ask for another xray if the first is not of the best quality.

Wouldn't bother me any. The OFA is not very dependable half the time anyway.

I would ask for references of past litter of this dam and sire....make a few calls to owners of older ppups ....and the pedigree shows some stong kklza dogs and all you can do is hope for the best
the way you raise the pup is what will determine the hips of your pup , in large.......find out how to do the best and feed the right things, including raw meats for the wonder natural VIT c or give lots of ester C to keep collagen in the joints...
get a list of what and what not to do in raising a gsd pup to keep hips in tact......only you can do the best and hope they are good...

If you believe in what OFA says A normal would include OFA fair, good and excellent. I personally would look farther back into the pedigree it is just as important if not more than the parents.

Ask Jeff or Pat for contacts from previous litters, they are great breeders and super people. I'm sure they will do as much as they can if you just ask. I just emailed Jeff the other day about one of his litters and it did take a couple days to get back to me (they are in a frenzie training and getting ready for shows right now) but he himself answered me with a leangthy email. Again, they are good people and Jeff knows his dogs inside out.

Thanks for the replies. I feel a lot better about it now. Jeff did respond to my questions and made me feel completely at ease. I am awaiting his response so I can give him a deposit.

I would still consider the litter. As someone else said, "A" Normal is OFA Fair to Excellent to either way both parents are passing. Besides two of my OFA Fair at 24 months are now 12 & 13, neither one ever had an issue and both competed in Agility, Obedience, and Tracking, one also did Herding. Both are crazy active. Actually one of them that I took to an Orthopedic Vet because of a spine issue looked at the Hip xrays we did at 12 years of age and the Vet though the Hips if send in at that time looked good enough to get a Good rating and said OFA was definatly off with her rating at 24 months.
