Hi, the breeder in Col. that I am getting my puppy from sent me the results of the puppy aptitude test she did. My male scores 3's on everything except the sight sensitivity test which he scored a 1 on. He also scored a 1 on structure which is a great. This puppy will be mostly a family pet, will do some obenice with him. I would like anyone's input on what this means and how the puppy might be like. THis is my first GSD. I have had dogs before and know how to handle puppies. THe puppy will go to work with me and when he is about 6 months will go into training. I will work him on my own until then. Any insight would be helpful.

Hi, I don't have any experience with them,  I don't use a specific test, but if you are talking about the Volharm (sic) test, click on this link and scroll to the bottom for results:

This is the test that is most often used. You will be able to understand the scores by studying it. For family pet, 3's are desired. However, much depends on how, when the test is given.

Here is some interesting reading for more thought on the subject:

Also PLEASE remember that a puppy aptitude test doesn't guarantee that a puppy grows up to be that personality type. It simply means that at a certain time, during a certain part of the pups life, in a certain area with certain circumstances the pup behaved a certain way. Personality is not a static thing, it changes and morphs often from one minute to the next. While I do use the volhard tests to kind of cofirm some of my observations, I don't see it as THAT much of a determining factor on what the dog will be like later. Chances are BETTER probably for a dog with 3's to do well in a family environment, but I have seen it switch later....

3's = really good for what you want. It will give you the chance to be very encouraging and easy on the pup and still have it turn out reasonable and sane. But, you'll want to be sure to build confidence and nuture boldness to a degree...because and ideal shepherd (for an active pet) would be 2-3/4s. Many working line litters have puppies that are all 1s and they would be way too much dog for 99% of people looking for pets. Finally, some of the individual aspects of the test are more highly predictive than others. Ask the breeder about the "forgiveness" factor (how readily the dog "forgave" after the touch sensitivity test) and pay very close attention to the retrieve portion of the test. A 3 is a perfect response (for any dog) and is does tend to have higher predictability than other aspects of the testing. Good Luck

I have a young dog that on the Volhard test scored on the first page all ones, but had a 3 for retrieve, also had great forgiveness or hardness I call it.  But these test results are  for stimulus not for drives once perceived, I made that mistake it doesn't really give good  idea of their genetic potential.

It's a good rough guide especially for pet homes.

Breeder in Col??  Is that Columbus Ohio?  If so, please contact me privately.  I would be interested in knowing who you are getting it from.

THank you all for your input. I feel better about getting the puppy. I thought the test was final and that is just the way the puppy would be like. Pretty lame. THanks again for the information. When I get pictures I will put them on the site. Three weeks until I go to Colorado. I can't wait.

I don't put a lot of store in standardized puppy testing. After raising so many dogs from puppies its all about instinct for me. I am wrong occasionally, thinking I see more drive in a pup than they end up having and vice versa, but not often and not too far off as a rule.

If there is anything good about having raised a LOT of pups, good, bad and in the middle, successful and disappointing, I guess that would be it.
