how do you handle the ones that know everything...................

I have a reg. male and I want to get a female playmate from your reg. Puppies I just want a pet but never mind forget the limited I just turned deaf.

Christmas eve, your family is getting ready here comes a brand new SUV in your driveway wanting a reg. GSD puppy for the child.

I want my son to watch the birth of puppies , I know someone that has a GSD male around the corner from where I live and I want a female.

The Phone rings, first question: do you raise GSD second question: how much do you want for them or how much are you getting for them.

My DH usually hands me the Phone right away after the first line " it's for you"

just intended to have some fun.

Give them a glass of egg nog, a purchase application, and wish them a Merry Christmas. Them tell them to come back after New Years.  LOL

Personally, I have had a few and the older I get the grumpier I have gotten with this.

To the first question - the pound has many playmates for your male.

second question. Sorry we were just on the way out if you come back after the holidays I will be more then happy to help you . (In the beginning I thought I had to all but bow down to the client but after missing birthdays and holiday hell even family life I decided I would run my life instead of the clietns. Now we do appts. 15 minutes late - I leave less you called.

third Watching the birth - I fixed that,  I filmed a birth and now I say here is a video!!!!!. hope you enjoy

fourth question - Sorry we have no dogs that fit the request - try the pound (this works well for a lot of questions)

fifth question   Yes, I raise shepherds  and how much are they? Let me ask what are you wanting a shepherds for? We want to have a litter, see they birthing , or some other bs - I am sorry we have none available but thank your for your interest BYE - Click

IF they say all the right answers and get in the door the first thing I hand them is a refusal contract. Basically saying at anytime during the process I have to right to refuse them a puppy. I have only had to use it a few times . But glad I had it.

A while back, I had people come over spend like 2 hours of my time, they even
got to watch a video I had of puppies being born, they seemed so very interested,
I explained how I needed to recieve a deposit to hold a pup for them, you know,
in good faith.
They left without talking about or leaving me a deposit, they just said they loved my dogs.

So then, a few weeks later, after all my pups went to their new homes, there they are
knocking on my door, they had just came back from vacationing.

wondering where their puppy was, they just didn't get it...........
they even had their kids with them.
Although, they did end up getting a pup from me, from the next litter, nothing like educating
the public.........

My recent litter, I had one person on the list that didn't give me a deposit, when the litter was
born, I called her first, she had already got a pup, a bernese mountain dog!

Also the people that want a girl and you only have boys, sorry we don't do sex changes!

I love the idea of having a video for those seeking to "educate" their kids!  Great idea.

Probably morbid and bad for business, but I like the idea of getting a video from the local shelter of an unwanted dog being euthanised and showing them that.  Would get the point across that if they are not willing to give your pup a home for life they should reconsider.

I like that idea. I actually did more talking out of buying than talking up my pups. I just wanted to touch on all the negative stuff and stress that they wont be good dogs unless trained and given something to do. I say strait up, "this pup will eat your couch if you leave it inside unattended". Just put that real picture in their head so there is no excuse in 6 months and they "didn't know" it was sooo much work! I kept my last pup up untill 5 months old instead of pushing her off on the first guy who wanted a pup. Non of my pups came back and I never heard of any problems when they went to their new homes. I hope that means I found the right families for my babies.

I agree with EK, and LOVE the idea off the birthing video. I'm always busy at the 'back end' helping mom and never thought of a video. Can I buy a copy? (email me privately if yes).

I have tons of info on my web page. I don't do phone calls or visits as initial contacts (no address posted on the web, just the town/state). I have do some 'preliminary weeding' of potential buyers first by email. These puppies are living ceratures, not canned vegatables, and we breeders have a resposnibility to try to find the best homes for our dog-babies.

If people can't be bothered to read the info on my site (is a GSD even the dog for you, etc) I am not very interested in selling them a dog If they send me one of those "you got puppies? how much emails" I reply "please check the web page. I am willing to answer any questions NOT covered already on the web page".  My voice mail directs them to the web page as well.

Some people are really good dog owner prospects, but they have emailed other breeders in the past and they never get a reply, or the web site is so out of date that the 'puppy' the saw listed sold a year ago (!) so they save time in the future and send a short "got puppies" email waiting to see if the person will contact them back before reading their whole site. So, I do understand why they end out a simple 'what cha got' email, but I reply right away. If they then go to my site and read (and read!), then at their next email I send them a questionaire. Both those steps weed out a lot of people. Then if they seem good, I'll chat on the phone if they are too far away to come to my kennel; but I prefer them to come in person. I still do have to turn down some people when they come and I decide I don't think they should have one of my puppies.

I agree with EK on the late appointments thing as well. I have found few people really had an emergency when they are late or are a no-show. Most think the world revolves around them and they will waste your time and not care. If they don't call to tell me they are trunning late I lock the gate after 15-20 mintues....too bad, so sad, go elsewhere. If you sell to a puppy to those people, they will be often a thorn in your side the whole time they own the dog. Me, I'm wanting to know where the "easy money' comes in! Over 30 years training, competing and breeding GSD's and I still haven't found it!
