I've heard that most schutzhund dogs who've made it through their 3 can easily do AKC tracking - is there any info specifically for the schutzhund tracking dog converting over? I'd like to do the AKC tracking titles with my retired male. Given the intense focus on footstep tracking for schutzhund track laying is usually very consistent over reasonable ground. I've heard that AKC tracking can occur over more variable terrain and that pace of the track layer can be inconsistent. Since AKC trackign permits air scenting and that is a HUGE no-no in schutzhund I'm wondering how the schutzhund dog deals with less consistent tracks.

Also, and resources at all for VST?

Thanks,

-Calvin

You can try "Tracking Dog" on the Yahoo! Groups.  There are quite a few folks who have done both styles. Under files there are many links to online resources.  Ed Presnell has a book out there on VST tracking.  You can also try the tracking club of wisconsin.  It is a very informative site http://www.tcow.net

I have gone from AKC (getting a TD on my then 10 month old GSD) now changing to Schutzhund.  Much harder than starting the other way around.  AKC tracking is a test not a tracking style.  TD tracks are more difficult so the training must be simplified--  working cover changes/obstacles gradually and then adding time to let the track age.  AKC allows the dog to truly work out a problem.  However, the SchH style is an excellent foundation.  Good luck

A Schutzhund-trained tracking dog can easily just go out and do an AKC track, no problem.  Most AKC dogs use air-scent and ground-scent, and move along much faster than the Schutzhund-trained "footstep" dog.  But AKC tracking is pass/fail, you aren't losing or gaining points by the dog being fast vs slow and methodical.  He can lay down on the article or not - they only want to see the dog indicate that he found the article.  It's fun and easy to take your retired Schh dog and do AKC tracking tests with it.  The only really different thing is using the tracking harness (must use it, and the leash is attached at the top) and you have to get your dog certified with a tracking judge before being allowed to enter a trial.  I've done both styles of tracking with Schh titled dogs, so maybe I'm one resource you can use - I'm sure your trainers have also done both - another resource you have at your disposable, ready and willing to help you in any way.
