I was standing on a hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And the spirit of a German Shepherd Dog
Was lying at my feet.
He looked at me with kind dark eyes
An ancient wisdom shining through
And in the essence of his being
I saw love there too.
His mind did lock upon my heart
As I stood there on that day
And he told me of this story
About a place so far away.
I stood upon that hillside
In a field of blowing wheat
And in a twinkling of a second
His spirit left my feet.
His tale did put my heart at ease
My fears did fade away
About what lay ahead of me
On another distant day.
“I live among God’s creatures now
In the heavens of your mind
So do not grieve for me, my friend
As I am with my kind.
My collar is a rainbow’s hue
My leash a shooting star
My boundaries are the Milky Way
Where I sparkle from afar.
There are no pens or kennels here
For I am not confined
But free to roam God’s heavens
Among my Shepherd kind.
I nap the day on a snowy cloud
Gentle breezes rocking me
And dream the dreams of earthlings
And how it used to be.
The trees are full of liver treats
And tennis balls abound
And Milkbones line the walkways
Just waiting to be found.
There even is a ring set up
The grass all lush and green
And everyone who gaits around
Becomes the Best of Breed.
For we’re all winners in this place
We have no faults, you see
And God passes out those ribbons
To each one, even me.
I drink from waters laced with gold
My world a beauty to behold
And wise old dogs do form my pride
To amble at my very side.
At night I sleep in an angel’s arms
Her wings protecting me
And moonbeams dance about us
As stardust falls on thee.
So when your life on earth is spent
And you stand at Heaven’s gate
Have no fear of loneliness
For here, you know I wait.

Thanks for sharing this lovely poem. I'm sure I'm not the only person here who got teary remembering the dogs that have gone to the bridge over the years. My first GSD,Dylan, is there and I am counting on seeing him one day.

Blitzen;

It is a great poem, and I thought I'd share with everyone. I have yet to lose my first GSD, she is now 14, but I know the time is near. She is the reason I now have 2 others, and will have many more!!

Thanks Kellbme4

My angel waits too.  It's been 8 years and I still well up with tears. She was such a gentle, loving girl, I think she was my soul mate.

My first was only 7 1/2 when he died almost 6 years ago.  I've owned a lot of dogs, but this one was very special 14 is a wonderfully long life;  you must be doing something very right., I  am hoping to have Blitz that long. He will be 6 on Christmas Day -  my best gift ever. And I swore I'd never own another dog LOL.

No matter how many years pass, it's always a heartbreaking memory isn't it, Pietown ?

Thanks Kellbme4, I lost my sweet boy Link in March and I've been feeling him lately.  Autumn is my favorite season, I love to walk in the leaves, watch the squirrels getting ready for winter, smell the smells and hear the rustle.  There are footprints that should be beside me and are not.  My new boy Drake keeps me busy, he's a good boy and I love him dearly but he is different and I still cry for my Link.  And winter is coming, I remember walking him at night while it was snowing, so peaceful, my steady friend beside me.  So many memories in his short but loving life, I'm thankful I had him, he was a good boy.  It's still so painful...

He's still there with you, Sparrow,  and one day you will see him or feel his presence if you haven't already.
