ok....first off, before anyone thinks this is not GSD related....it is....i will explain in a min.....

some of you know i am a stay at home mom, and i have mention that i would like to start working now that my kids are in school, i wanted to work with animals....well...yipee!!!!  I am going to see a man today that has  boarding/riding stables, about going to work there feeding the horses, cleaning stalls...etc....this is my dream job....to be around animals...

there is only one problem....i have always loved horses, read about them constantly...but have never actually owned one....or been around them much....have rode some- and voluntered at happy trails once (a riding place for handicaped kids)....but my parents were not the type of people that could put time and money into a horse, (tho i begged non-stop as a kid).....therefor i don't have much hands-on experience......

now, for those of you that have stables, if someone has a passion to learn, would you hire them for things like feeding/ cleaning...helping out? even tho they have no hands -on experience, would you be willing to let them to get that experience doing simple jobs to start out? If you were considering hiring someone like this, what would you want to hear and see from them? any advice would be appreciated, this would be a blessing for me...and my dog...which brings me to why i say this is GSD related....

the main reason i have decide to go to works is, not because i have to but for the desire to actually get back in touch with animals again....boss has inspired me to do that...it has been such a joy to teach him things and learn about GSD's.......I want to be able to go to training classes with him, mabye one day start doing some kind of sport with him....but any extra money my husband make all goes into our house that we have been trying to build since katrina.....so if i want to pay for all these things for my dog,....it is my intrest-my hobby-my goals-, i think i should go to work in order to pay for it...thats why i am so excited about this job, not only will i get to be around horses/ animals, but i will be able to better my dog, and better my life by doing so....

again, any advice would great....wish me luck!

Hi Julie,

Sure they will hire you if have the desire. That is what it is all about IMO. The things a trainer would want to see is that number one you are on time everyday and that you show up everyday. they will be relying on you to be there and that frees them up for other things and the horses have to be taken care of no matter what. you also should do a good job but get the job done. If you are working on a salary which is what most trainers will do then they will more than likely have different stuff for you to do after you are done feeding and cleaning stalls. I trained for many years and have worked for other trainers as well. Feed first is what we always did. Then maybe clean stalls or if it is a trainer you could be saddling horses or grooming. Just be on time and be honest about your experience and your willingness to learn. Enthusiasm goes a long way for me. Good luck!

iluv, I have horses at my house, also have a very good friend down the road that has forty plus horses, i would rather hire someone with the heart & desire to be with & take good care of the horses, then someone who just wants money. It is great to be around such wonderful animals. It is hard, very hard work, but very satisfing. I would express your desire to learn and express the fact that u are an animal person, thats very important, one thing though make sure you explain what u have done & not done, so they can tell u the right way/wrong way, u dont want to get hurt or put a horse in danger  because they dont explain everything. Also make sure u ask all the questions u can when u start, dont feel stupid, just ask, it will help.  Good Luck. Let me know how it goes, if u have any horse questions please feel free to email me. I have always heard that "horse people" make the best "dog people"...so I would imagine that "dog people" would make the best "horse people" too...So I wouldn't think it's too much of a stretch to think that with your desire to do a good job and to work with animals...that you would make a very good "horse person"...Good Luck...

Julie you will never ever regret it if you do this. I can 100% gaurantee it.  Being around horses is a medicine. It heals the turmoil in you. It quiets the anxieties. It's restful even when you are doing six things at once.

And there are tons of snotty teens or adults who have had years of experience with horses that get jobs at stables. And they are often bored and watching the clock. If I had a big farm or stable I would hire someone like you so fast it would make your head spin.

If you do it can you please PM me? I would love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Dawgs
