With all the discussion on RAW and other dog foods we've been having I got to wondering what kind of meats do people use for the RAW diets?  So far I've heard beef, chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, rabbit, vennison, elk, buffalo.  What about  squirrel, goat, goose, duck, horse, or what else?  What would make you choose one over the other?  And if you could get any of those listed, which ones would you pick, or not, and why?  Or would you base more on how the animal was raised, hormone free, antibiotic free, controlled processing versus a specific kind of meat?

Ian Billinghurst is like the godfather of the BARF diet. His book Give Your Dog A Bone pretty much covers it all.

I use any and all kinds of muscle meat for my "mix" beef, chix, fish, lamb. Anything that's on sale. I also add vegies & fruit(about 1/2 of the total mix) and organ meat about (1/8 of the total). I also add a little kelp & alfalfa powder and omega 3/6 oil to their meals. Once every few days I add an egg ,I crush up the shells and give them that too, great source of calcium. They also get any kind of bones that are on sale usually chix & turkey necks/backs, beef, pork ribs. It sounds like a lot of work but once you get use to what your feeding it's like anything else becomes routine and you know there's no crap in it.

Hope it helped

I feed 7 dogs on raw, I also feed all types of meat and adding some fruit & veggs. I also add 1000 mg. of Ester C and apple cider vinegar.

My youngest shepherd is just 9 weeks and she is also on the raw.

Only down side I have found is when I have to be gone a day or two, and trying to get my 30 year old son to feed the same why I do! So yes I keep some good kibble in the back frig.

I bought apple cider vinegar months ago and have yet added it for my dogs consumption. Do they like it and what are the benifits?

I too, would like to know what the benefits are to the apple cider vinegar.  My young dog has been raised entirely on raw, and I don't think I'd ever change back to kibble as a regular food.  I keep cans of mackeral (SIC), they come in handy on those days I forget to thaw something out.  I make sure to give it a rinse before plopping it in his bowl.  I have heard the exotic meats are good for dogs that have alergies, but I think raw in general is good for dogs that have alergies!

LOL Sue I keep canned Mackeral, Salmon and now Sardines for the same reasons. It's quick and easy when nothing is thawed or I just want to surprise the dogs.
