This is a sad story, a member of our club bought his first GSD about 6 months ago, he brought her out for training, she was a very sweet working line girl. He was very proud of his girl. About 2 weeks ago I noticed that she was not walking right. I told him that I thought he should take her and get her hips x-rayed. He said the breeder told him to do it at 1 year of age, I told him I did not think she would make it that far and to get them x-rayed as soon as possible!  What I was seeing was, both hips were out of their sockets. I knew this girl was in pain! He took her the next day and had her hips done. She had the worse case of HD that his vet has seen in all of the 25 years that he was a vet!  He had to put her to sleep yesterday at the ripe age of 10 months! I don't know if I could have done what he had to do! The breeder of this dog is a breed warden for a local Sch club in our town. My heart goes out to Lena and her owner and my she find peace at the rainbow bridge and of course be pain free!

That's terrible. Poor girl. What a horrable thing to have to go thru and so young. Heart goes out to the owner, I know how he is feeling.

Please send my reguards to the gentlemen. It is always hard to deal with HD but even harder when it is a young pup. I too have had to make that call. Not a easy one but one that must be made. May she rest in peace.

A breed warden??! That really pisses me off. I don't know how people sleep at night. I feel so bad for that puppy and owner. Terrible situation.

I too have had to put a young pup to sleep, 5 months old.. always a sad thing to do.. sadder that the dog should be so painful.

However, being a breed warden has nothing to do with it.. we all do our best - researching our pedigrees. checking out hips and elbows thruout the pedigree and outside of it... simply put, it is going to happen. We try to stack the odds in our favor but we just can't control everything.

What is important is that the dog is now pain free and the breeder will do the right thing.....

Everyone wants to place blame and it ijust isn't that simple....

so sorry for this young guy and his baby dog

That's awlful sad, poor little girl, least she isn't in pain an more.

I wonder how her siblings are?

I heard it matters more about siblings in relation to hips, more than the parents.

Severe HD can come from clear parents; I know, it happened to me. 2 puppies out of 9 were put down at 6 months, no sockets. Both parents, all 4 g-parents and a few of the g-g-parents were also OFA certified normal. Some research did turn up some dysplastic littermates of the grandsire and a litter mate to the sire of my litter turned out to be moderately dysplastic.  This is why I will not consider buying another puppy with any NZ's in the first 4 generations and I will try to learn the status of the siblings as well. It does make a difference.

I feel for the owner of this puppy and for the breeder. It's not a whole lot of fun for anyone.
