Karmen Byrd

by Karmen Byrd on 19 September 2007 - 15:09

I got an email from a puppy customer yesterday and he said one week ago the dog started having some problems and then would only get up to eat (the dog is 11 months old).  He took the dog to the vet and the regular vet snapped an xray and told the guy he had an undeveloped acetabulum and that is was shallow.  Now I have no idea if this dog was positioned right or if arthritic changes have occured. He is taking the dog to an orthopedic vet today but since it was accute do you all think it could be pano?  I would have thought an undeveloped hip joint or severe HD would have at least shown some signs by now.  I know from have a HD dog a logn time ago and working in the ortho industry that pain usually that accute if the dog has had this problem for awhile. I am not saying it can't be but just wanted some others opinions.  The owner is going to send me some digiital pictures of teh xrays.  I watched this dog in June for them and he was bouncing off the walls which looked like a strong back power, no bunny hopping or signs of lameness at all.....Again he said it started a week ago?

the actual email from the owner

I'd be inclined to guess that the orthopedic vet may have a different diagnosis.  If the pup is in such good shape you are right it would be more likely that pano would cause that much sudden pain as opposed to a hip problem.   That's just my guess though.  Be sure to let me know what the vet says.

I had a puppy buyer recently call me about the same thing on a 10  month old pup. Her vet told her the dog had HD and would need surgrey. I made an appointment with my Vet and we  went together and had xrays taken.  Turned out to be Pano and not HD. Alot of it has to do with HOW the dog is postioned. If the hips aren't postioned correctly, you can make them look pretty bad. I would definitlely get a 2nd opinion on this.  He is at the right age for Pano, so hopefully it is Pano and not HD. Let us know what the Orthopedist has to say.

He sounds like he needs to see an orthopedic specialist, so that will be a more actual opinion,

I wouldn't start to worry yet,
hopefully, it will go fine.

Maybe that's why OFA doesn't  certify till 24 months, maybe he'll grow out of it.....................

OK here is a story   I have a client that has a mild HD dog and everything was good  until the other week the dog was not wanting to get up and move at all!!!! (kinda like yours) well, I told them to take her to the vet. We have film so there was no need for xrays we know she has HD. Well they put her on meds (NO check up no blood work NOTHING. and said if this does not work you might want to put her down!!!!!

Well after seeking another vet and doing blood work and examine it turn out to be a TICK!!!!!!!! after  just two days on new meds the dog was up and playing .

It could be pano happens a lot in large breeds.

I agee EK. Mild HD should not cause problems. Wow a tick I will remember that. Was it tick fever?

I believe so. I was very surprise that the first vet missed this but then again vets are vet some good and some bad. This one just is rotten on more then one account.

Alway get a second opinion

I agree with everyone else on letting the specialist's opinion tell the tale.

But somthing you said makes me a little worried about elbows. " I watched this dog in June for them and he was bouncing off the walls " I know of 2 puppies that caused their elbows to go bad (and ended up having to be put down) because they were constantly bouncing off the walls of the kennel almost every waking hour. The slamming made is so that the elbows "blew" out and they were in tremendous pain.

Just a thought to add into the pot.

Keep us updated.

Thanks everyone for  your advice.  Ruck's appointment was today but I have yet to hear from his owner.  I hope to soon though.  Maybe

no news is good news...

I may have been misunderstood when I said bouncing off the walls..I didnt mean literally bouncing off the walls but just full of drive and energy and never showing signs of pain or discomfort of any kind.  He was looking great and healthy..
