So, I know it's not like when a dog gets titled or wins a show or something. But I was so proud of my 7 month old just now. I took him for a walk down this kind of sandy dirt road next to the railroad tracks. It's about 15 feet from the tracks themselves. I had him off leash and was practicing his recall. He was doing great then saw a lizard and went after it. He did a sliding stop like a reining horse when I called and ran back!
Okay, so it gets better. I heard the train coming from the distance behind us so called him over and put him on a 10' leash. He wasn't afraid but was kind of walking lighter, more springy, for a few steps then back to normal. I thought it would be a good time to work on obedience and.....drum roll....he did sit-stay-come, then down-come, then down sit-come with a train whipping by fifteen feet away!
Okay, so it gets better. We had gone about a mile and this was the first time we've gone this road. So on the way back I noticed he had his head down and was snuffling. (He does that when he's really sniffing things intently. He sounds like a pig looking for truffles.) Then I noticed what he was sniffing was my footsteps. Every footstep without missing one for the entire mile back. The road is soft enough that you can see them all. Sometimes I had walked to the other side of the road or spun around playing with him and he traced every step.
I am doing the SAR prep but at this point it's OB, recall, socialization, exposure that sort of thing. We have done no tracking work at all. He just did it on his own. How cool is that???
Anyway, I just had to say it where people would understand that it's a neat thing.

Just 7 months old? I'd sure be excited about that dog too. He sounds like a keeper to me . Did you breed him too?

Blitzen-Naw, but my friend did. I told him what I wanted and he picked Vandal out for me. He's been breeding for twenty something years. Used to be mostly DDR and CK then some harder showline. He is now of the mind that GSDs are GSDs (or should be) and is carefully breeding a more blended dog. My boy's sire is pure showline (alot of Mark vom Haus Beck) and mother is a lot of Fichtenbrink and Borstenbachtal (I know the spelling is wrong) and Ferro vom Fegglehoff. His dogs are AWESOME. Bomb sniffers, SAR, K9, great pets/protectors. He's not casual with his breedings and mixing lines but I think he's just sick of the huge difference of dogs that shouldn't be a split gene pool. I'm presuming to speak for him and these are my impressions of his outlook but I'm a newbie and he's a pro so it shouldn't be taken as verbatum.
And I can't believe he did this at seven months. I was blown away. I mean, a MILE with his head down. I just couldn't get over it. I'm walking on air right now.

That pup's got a whole lot of try in him. Especially cool because at that 7 month stage they can be a tad bit squirrelly just by nature! Bodes well for the future.

He sounds like my kind of dog. All Blitz could do at 7 months was platz for a treat. Come to think about it, that's all he can do now and he's almost 6 LOL.

It is great to hear not only did you get a great puppy from a breeder but also one that is what you were wanting and he is doing nicely at 7 months. Sounds great Keep us posted .
