Kelly M Shaw

I would like to know if there is a raw food diet out there that would supplement my old girl from being on KD science diet for her kidney's.

She had heart worms, when she was on heart guard plus, and had the treatment to get rid of the heart worms. The treatment caused her to now have kidney disease, so I would like to know if raw food can take the place of this KD science diet.

I would appreciate any and all help!!

Thanks

Kel

I have a 6.5 year old SAR K9, that at 10 months was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure. The vet wanted me to put her on a Kidney diet. I refused, and she has been raw fed since the diagnosis. I am very careful about the amounts she gets, and the diet is well balanced muscle meat, to bone to offal to ground veggies per her individual needs. Honestly, I add more raw veggies for her than the other dogs. I get blood levels done every six months to make sure creatinine and BUN levels are good. I also had to inform my vet that dogs that are raw fed have different values than dogs that aren't. Mainly because labs do not calibrate for raw feeding. My dog is considered a medical miracle per the folks at my vet as they expected her to die before her second birthday. My dog still works, doesn't really show any signs of kidney failure, other than she drinks more and needs to pee more. But, not a significant amount. A raw diet can work!  I suggest finding a holistic vet who understands the additional supplements that are needed to help a dog with lower kidney function process. If humans can live on one kidney dogs can live on 50% function. Good Luck!

Thanks a lot guy's!!

fm2410,

I did go on the website(thank you)and copied it all down(43 pages)and I am going to read thru it all.

DeesWolf,

I will aslo look at finding a holistic vet to do that for me(thank you).

My other question would be, if I've had her on thyrozine{spelling}and KD science diet dog food, and now I want to put her on raw, would she still have to take her thyrozine on a daily basis twice a day?

Thanks in Advance

Kel

I believe the meds are necessary , just dont have to have science diet anything.....a low fat diet food with low protein,,,the low protein is the hardest to find.....try to find the same amount of protein the science diet hs.....that is the key with kidney.....low protein....

check the sites listed and use some of the diets suggested by those who have had that happen, like Deeswolf....Id refuse SD also....
