Hello,

Is anyone else having problems with fleas?  I have been using Fronline Plus, and I am still battling with fleas!!  I have never had them this bad, does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use on their bedding and kennels?  They all have cedar chips, and I keep the kennels clean, I have bathed and dipped them over the summer.  Before anyone makes the comment about the vet, I am calling my vet in the morning to see if Advantage would be better, or if he can recommend something else.  I am just wandering if anyone else has any ideas.  I was researching and found something called DE (Diatomaceous Earth) that I may try, it is supposed to be all natural with no pesticides.  Has anyone ever used that?  Please help, I am going NUTS!!  Thank you for any intelligent answers.  ;-)

Liz,

I have used DE for 2 years. It is wonderful. You can put 1 tblsp in their food and you can sprinkle it on their coat.  You have to make certain that it is the FOOD GRADE kind. This is very important and also make sure that you or the dog inhale the powder while putting it on their coat.

I have never had to topically use it. I just mix it with some water and pour it over their food.

Diatomaceous earth is a very finely powdered type of fossil that comes from certain parts of the world. The formations in the Badlands of South Dakota are comprised of these fossilized remains. It works by clogging the breathing passages of insects such as fleas so it does not have the toxicity as can a pesticide.

The only time that I ever had a flea problem was when the entire southeastern United States endured a massive outbreak during the summer of 1990 or 1991. I do not remember the dogs having any issues with fleas-it was we humans who were aggravated by them.

I thought it was something for the flowerbeds to stop snakes from getting close to the house.....it tears their tummies before they can go far.....but its not a powder...and you dont eat it..

I've been giving mine fresh garlic from the start of spring. I usually chop one whole glove up and add it to their food at in the morning and at night. I have tried the powder form yet, my females are really picky and don't like it that way.

I have found that Frontline or Advantage is a waste of money.

Program sounds like it might work good for you as well.  It won't kill adult fleas, but will act as birth control for your fleas.  If your pets or on Interceptor, Sentinal is Interceptor with Program.  Especially if the fleas are a problem in your house/kennels.   Advantage or Advantix might work better or you.  Sometimes fleas build up a resistance to certain products.  It might take a couple of months, but the program should help too.  What state did you live in again?  I know that our fleas go bye bye once we've had a hard frost.  Another product to use in a pinch is something called capstar.  It's a pill and within a half an hour or so all the fleas drop off dead.  Also a very safe product.

Tammy,

Thank you, I have been reading on it and was going tomorrow to get it and try it atleast, but I know if you are using it, well it must be good!!  ;-))  I am annoyed with the Frontline not really working, it does seem to be working on my inside girl more so than the outside ones.  Now is that all you use on your guys, and you don't dust them with it you feed it to them?  Thanks for the info I will definately try it!!

Apparently DE will kill the fleas with in a few hours, it is safe to dust your home and the dogs bedding and living quarters.  And as soon as flea eggs hatch they are exposed and die soon also.  I just wanted to see if anyone else has heard of it or used it, and what kind of results they had with it.

Poopy,

I have also heard of the garlic in their food, but I thought it was only useful if the dogs had been on it for a long period of time and I think the person told me they used garlic tabs.  I could be wrong though.  I guess I better start now right?  LOL  Frontline has usually worked pretty good for me, but for some reason this year has been bad, we haven't had much rain at all, it has been pretty dry here in VA.

I am posting a link to the site on DE (diatomaceous earth).
