Hi,

I thought I might get some more exposure here compared to the want section. I also had another individual contact me that is looking for something the same for an SD so I was going to pass those on too. Thanks if anyone can point us in the right direction.

1.5 - 3yrs old gsd wanted to be a service dog.  Dog should have good nerves, very solid, stable tempermant , be laidback and must have a high natural desire to retrieve. Med energy level. This dog should love to interact with his handler by playing fetch and tug. Dog should also have a good food drive and be well socialized and have good on/off switch as well as be extremley clearheaded. Must be friendly with all types of dogs, animals and people. Dog should be very quick to "forgive" weather from having it's foot stepped on or a toodler running up and pulling the dog's tail. This cannot be a dog raised only in the kennel.

Service dogs face many challenges that a pet or other working dog does not, such as having random strangers touch it or grab at it. People do weird things around  these dogs like barking at them or making strange noises to try distract them. Dog must have excellent ability to focus on it's handler and just be overall mellow to deal with that kind of thing.

Dog must be in the US.

Please include a phone # and best time to call with your email.

Thanks,

Whose gonna train this gsd  ?????? why dont you contact the orgs that already have them trained...????It s almost impossible to get the whole ball of wax , for what you want, without spending mega bucks, first for the dog , then to certify it.....tell us a little more about for wht need are you doing this.....and where will it be trained....

I know two breeders that have used their lines for such  ,,,,I also have  a guide dog placed in Palestine <Tex out of one of my females...but it was just luck that this pup had that kind of temperament....out of work lines....she has inherited Jada Steffen Haus temperament   because Pirol was bred to a Sh dog...

Dog will be doing some balance tasks and some hearing tasks. No program trains for what we are looking for and serves our geographical area. We have looked. We are working with a service dog trainer as far as tasks go. I am aware that these are rare dogs we have been looking for awhile.

Too bad you aren't looking for a young puppy..............my 7 month old is my psychiatric service dog in training, and I highly recommend her breeder, Steve Miller of Vom Haus Miller German Shepherds in Spring Green WI. This girl is exceptionally well-behaved while she is in vest, extremely obedient, great at ignoring all manner of distractions by the public, she likes to play with other dogs, and is by far the most forgiving dog I have ever owned. Her paws get stepped on occasionally and she is nothing buy loving and sweet-tempered when it happens. And I trained her myself. Her nerves are steady, she is not afraid of anything but she is not aggressive either. She barks at suspicious activity and then is quiet. If you don't want to get a young pup I would suggest  a rescue.

by the way, yellowrose, SDs do not have to be certified. Federal law  protects the rights of service animals. The Americans with Disabilities Act states that a service animal is any animal individually trained to perform specific tasks for the benefit of a person with a physical or mental impairment. Certification is not required although it looks more official when dealing with public access. Just trying to inform the public as I have used SDs for more than 4 years..........that I trained myself.
