I hear they make great Schutzhund dogs. Some of the breeder sites I'v visited say they are a bit more handler sensitive than GSD's. One breeder went out of their way to point out that unlike the GSD, they don't diverge into "show" or "working" lines, they simply are what they have been for 500 - 600 years. I like them (from what I've read and pictures I've viewed), though I'm more use to the GSD's more refined head and natural ears (not crazy about cropping). I'm curious about anyones's first hand experience if they've used this breed in dog sport.

I've personally always liked and wanted this breed. They originated in France and were(still are)used as police dog's, border patrol. I would still love to get this breed. They are coming into the AKC show's, but there just aren't enough of them to be entered in it yet. I love the black/rust color, but the blue merle does throw you for a loop, because I'm use to seeing smaller breeds with that color, not the large ones like these guy's. I can't say I've heard them of being handler sensitive, but have heard of them doing Ring Sport/Schutzhund. I am not a big fan of cropping either, but they really look nice having it done. I also like the Cane Corso's too!!

Ive heard  very slow to mature by comparison.   I love their looks too. Ive seen a few on You tube.

Uglydog - slow like DDR dogs?

Kelly I like canes too, and Argentine Dogo (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Argentine+Dogo) I wish the dogo's came in another color other than white. In regard to ear cropping on Beaucerons, I wonder if a buyer can request that that the puppy breeder leave a pup uncropped? Or if they insist on cropping, can you request the longer Doberman crop vs the shorter fighting dog crop? I'm guessing probably not because buyers back out of pup sales all the time, but the option would be nice.

I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem not cropping. You would just have to request it, before they do it, obviously. Over in the European area's you see less cropping and tail docking over there than in the states here, so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem for them not to crop the ears if the new owner didn't want it done.  I would probably still get it done if I was to get one, that's JMO.  I also like the Dogo's as well, and wish they came in more color's. I haven't heard that their slow maturing like the DDR dog's. That's something you can ask a few different breeder's about to make sure they are all on the same page.

Slow to mature , means so high drive a puppy , that they are crazy puppy actions so long,,that they dont focus like the west ger, lines....Ddr sometimes are so high, and stubborn headed, self motivated in one direction,,,theirs    that they take longer to get the puppihood out of them....when you cant get serious training,   you have to wait on the dog...

Pup out of Iska v Kapbrusch is very immature,,,she is all play, driven high and wont come back down....have to keep her busy, and with a lot of things to do...she has to get some of that gone , before you start drilling her and trying to get serious.....no need to try....let her mature.......a little...

I think thats what was meant by slow to mature....? JMO from experience for what that;s worth , here...

Yes-Golden , slow like DDRs, maybe even slower.    Read it from a working breeder, cant remember where or Id link it. Never seen one firsthand so I cant verify.

I agree cropping must be done.

I  personally dont like the way Canes work, seen a few on UTUBE.   But nice dogs, I rescued one, was starving abd about 2 days from death, hes now 145lbs. Just gorgeous, and on a nice farm.

I saw a vid on youtube of a Dogo literally being matched in a cage with a full grown montain lion.   Cant find it now.  The Dogo in 10 seconds,  had the lion  down & by the throat and worked over to the side to avoid the claws.  Was amazing, Im sure the lion was killed.

The Argentians are into machismo and hunt/train their dogs for boar/puma. Only they dont hunt with guns, only knives. The vids are on there. Some are in Spanish as well. Really incredible.

Yellowrose - thanks for clarifying slow to mature.

Ugly - I'm glad I didn't see that video, it would have made me sick to my stomach. I once saw a video where a captured tiger was flipped onto her back while her pawas were tied to the four cornors of the cage she was in and a group of "people" stabbed her to death. The levels of barabarism human beings are capable of sometimes leave me very very numb.

Question: How do you pronounce "Beauceron"? Is Bo Ka Ron? or Bew Se Ron?

Another interesting factoid: They have double back dew claws. This is not considered a fault:

by GoldenElk on 14 September 2007 - 18:09

About the double dewclaw:

A unique characteristic of this breed is the double dewclaws on the hindlegs. These are required by the breed standard. I am often asked why the Beauceron has double dewclaws. It is French tradition for the French herding and flock dogs to have double dewclaws in the rear. Some folks say it goes back to the early days of the breed. The better herders had the double dewclaws. Eventually, through selective breeding, single dews were bred out. Now, double dewclaws is a sign of a true Beauceron.

Golden..I didnt know what I was clicking, it was in Spanish & my Spanish is very rusty.   Shocking to say the least, unlike anything Id ever seen before.  But many of these folks in Argentina are ranchers that must keep down the Cat population.  The dogs aid in that & were probably teaching him dos/donts.   Darwin theory I think,  for many dog.

Pronunciation is the 2nd
