I am beginning to make myself worried and am scared to ask, but I noticed this spot on my almost one  year young pup's eye a few days ago. (Look at left hand side of image.) It never was there before, as I double checked from old pictures of him. Should I be running to the vets? This can't be the beginnings of pannus can it? He seems his normal mischievious self but there most definately is a spot on his eye where there never was one before! Please help if you can! Thanks!

As long as it's not a raised bump, it should be fine........
My niece has blue eyes & a small spot of brown is in one eye, her dad has brown eyes,
so it's probably from him.

Just make sure it isn't a raised little bump, cause then it could be a particle or something.

Mirasmom,

It doesn't look like a raised bump, more like an elipse of pigment just next to the pupil. I sure hope it's nothing.

I really dont think its anything to get frantic over. Many DVM's dont believe in Iridology, while others swear by it. Its fairly new with canines, but being used with good results. Iridologists believe that when there is toxic build up or a nervous system imbalance the problem is shown in the iris.

Before you noticed the spot was your pup under any type of stress? Fireworks, seperation anxiety, etc? below is a dog with a kidney problem which showed up in his right iris.

An iridologist uses charts and maybe computers to detect a problem area

Well, Abhay,

That is one ugly picture of an eye! According to your chart, the spot position on my dog's eye would indicate some stomache distress, which we certainly have been through, recently. We are also undergoing some construction on our home, but Mojo doesn't seem to be bothered by it much, he has managed to make quite a few friends with the workers. (I know they were sneaking him slices of ham when I wasn't looking.) He's actually got one of the best temperaments of any dog I've ever had, with very solid nerves, fireworks and thunder don't phase him at all, and he's not bothered by separation anxiety either.

Question though, if the stomach distress is gone, shouldn't the spot be gone too?

Mirasmom,

Thanks for your encouraging words, but I am still a bit uneasy about it, just because it never used to be there.

I was hoping someone with experience with pannus would be able to say to me, "Relax, pannus doesn't look like that!"

(And what, no opinions from the rat pack either! I thought for sure they'd want to say something like, serves you right for throwing a cooked bone to your skinny ol' overpriced, pet of a GSD! My DH would have yelled at me too, if he knew.)

So still, if ANY one can ease my brain with what it is or isn't, I sure would appreciate it. I will be devastated if something is truly, seriously wrong with my guy, having lost my other GSD baby at only 14 months this past  December.  This  would just  be too hard and too soon  for  dealing with something  tragic. Thanks.

Deb,

Your dog's eye doesn't look anything at all like Pannus. Pannus most always shows in both eyes as well.  Providing you don't feel Iridology is nothing but a hoax, you could try some good ProBiotics and see if after a month or so the spot seems to be getting smaller.

Just for your Peace of Mind an appointment with a Vet Ophthalmologist, or just a good DVM will most likely put you at ease.

I believe Pannus shows up around the age of two..........................

My girl Brianna has Pannus.  She is a white shepherd, and we noticed her first sign around 2 years old.  We treat it every day with drops, and I think I'm going to have to make another trip to the specialist.  Here is a new picture of her eyes.

I think that is just hyperpigmentation. I've seen it before, nothing to worry about. Show it to your vet to be sure.

by beetree on 14 September 2007 - 02:09

ShepherdWoman, thanks so much for your pictures! I can clearly see Mojo does not have pannus!  I still have a mystery to solve, and will probably do as Abhay says, and have my vet check it out if it doesn't go away soon. I am prone to be an internet diagnoser with a hint of hypochondria, such that it makes my DH's eyes roll.   I am sure your Brianna is a great girl and lucky to have you, too.

And Abhay,  I think I will try the Pro-Biotics, they certainly can't hurt, and he does seem to have a delicate digestive system, and as I might have said, I would like to see him with a bit more weight.

As for a hoax? Who knows! I assume this is an ancient art based on physical observations passed on by acolytes down through the ages? Who knows what profundity lies within this, or not. Odd that it is coincedental that the spot and stomach distress area do seem to match, in my instance.
Like in rumors, there usually also lies a bit of truth.

I'm beginning to think I'm barking up the wrong tree, though, and maybe should be asking Ceph if maybe there is some kind of  latent eye spotting gene.

And mirasmom, thanks for the reassurance once again, it helps!

~Deb
