Birdy

by Birdy on 11 September 2007 - 18:09

I wrote Canidae a few months ago because my girl woudn't eat the food. I asked if they changed the formula and they wrote back saying

nothing has changed.

I just assumed then it must be that she's picked up one more weird habit during her heat cycle. Maybe the poor dog could taste it. I still have been feeding it but not after today.

I feel bad making her eat it thinking she was just a bag of emotions.

It just goes to show that even "premium" foods can have issues.

Here is the information below. Plus the links.

Canidae Dry Dog Food tests positive for Acetaminophen in Private Test

EDITED: The original dates posted were incorrect, showing July instead of June. Correct dates are below.

A composite of two different Canidae Dry Dog foods has tested positive for acetaminophen in tests done by Expertox. The food was sent in by a pet owner - samples from opened bags were sent to Expertox in ziploc bags. Additional tests on samples from sealed bags are expected to be done shortly. A copy of the test results can be found at http://www.petfoodrecallfacts.com/lab.html.

The two foods are:

Canidae All Life Stages Dry Dog Food
RM 6/7/07, use by 6/7/08
http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html

Canidae (All Life Stages) Lamb and Rice Formula Dry Dog Food
RM 6/6/07, use by 6/6/08
http://www.canidae.com/dogs/lamb-and-rice/dry.html

Both bags were purchased in early July, 2007. It is not known at this time whether one or both of these foods contain acetaminophen.

A total of 6 NON-recalled pet foods that we know about have tested positive for acetaminophen in tests done by Expertox, they include:

  • Innova Dry Dog Food
  • Hills Science Diet Light Adult Dry Cat Food
  • Hills Science Diet Sensitive Stomach Dry Cat Food
  • Pet Pride Turkey & Giblets Canned Cat Food

You can get more information on these results at http://www.petfoodrecallfacts.com/lab.html

  • Another non-recalled Dry Dog Food also tested positive for Acetaminophen, that company has NOT gone public with this information. (An earlier post on that is here)

You can see a summary list of all NON-Recalled foods that we know about that have tested positive for contaminants HERE. (This file has been added to the Download section at the top of this blog)

WYF? Is someone (PETA) trying to kill off our pets or what? This is getting rediculous!

OMG I have been feeding the Chicken & Rice somewhat. I haven't had any problems that I noticed with the dogs. Thanks for the info. I have switch to Orijen but still have part of a bag of Canidae left. I actually feed mostly RAW too.

My girl is fine...

I'm just sorry I didn't listen to her instead of the Canidae Rep.

I do feed her mostly raw but my heath forces me to the hospital a lot and my husband isn't one to feed raw. So I keep her on this food "thinking it was good for a "dog food" so she's used to eating something easy should I end up in the hospital.

I had her on EVO but she started looking poorly after a few months on that food but it looks like it might be included in this tainting as well. I'm kind of limited to the quality foods here in the lower Mid-West so not many options for me.

I heard that Diamond is suppose to come out with a grain free food like Evo here soon. I might try her on that now that Diamond is more incontrol of their quality control.

My Aila, my girl is just fine.

Birdy,

My dog's appetite for Canidae also recently, seemed to pale. He also would vomit after eating it.  I just bought some other high quality, American made, corn free chow, and no problems, he is eating and not throwing up again.

Mirasmom: I kept throwing him rib bones because he is young, runs around alot, and was/is skin and bones!

What I wonder is, if  this  is just a coincidence, or not?

This is absolutely insane. Acetominophen is Tylenol.Wouldn't you know it: the world's largest manufacturer is China!! Who knows if it finds its way to livestock feed lower down the food chain.

Check this link for acetominophen toxicity: http://www.michvet.com/library/emergency_acetaminophen_toxicity.asp

Acetominophen is more toxic to cats than to dogs. Basically, it produces methemoglobinemia (also referred to as Heinz body anemia) which prevents the normal hemoglobin formation required to carry oxygen to the tissues. The gums and tongue become cyanotic--turn a muddy, brown color. The urine becomes brown. The feces become black and tarry (melena).

I saw acetominophen toxicity after a friend's dog had ingested Night-time Tylenol. Even with the best of expensive treatment, the dog died anyway.

I'm so glad that I feed raw and encourage others to do likewise.
