Have any of you ever had your dog donate blood?  I can't remember if I posted this before, but it's a great thing to do.  Chaos gave for his first time, not too long ago.  We got his results back for his blood type and he is universal : - }  We are going again in Oct. to give again.  You should check it out in your area to see if they do this type of thing.  The dog must be a year old or older and must be over 50 lbs. and in good health.  Think about it.  Just like people giving blood and saving lives, your canine friend can do the same thing.

I did not know that?

Yes, yellowrose, your dog can give blood just like humans.  They have different kinds of blood types too.  Chaos is blood type 4, which is the universal type.  Google it and see what you come up with.  They like to take at least 400 MLs.  It's about the size of a coke can.  My vet was amazed when I told them how much they take each time.  They got 385 from Chaos before he started figiting.  So they stopped.  He did great up until then though, lol.

Most of my dogs have ben blood donors. It's amazing how they seem to know when the collection is just about done. They always would squirm at the very end just about 3 minutes. shy of completion.

Here in NJ, and PA the University of PA vet school has a mobile blood mobile which travels all over the 2 states collecting blood.

Like Humans How Many Groups of Blood Does Dogs Have? Please Explain It

ShepherdWoman

by ShepherdWoman on 10 September 2007 - 21:09

This kind of explains it.  Chaos is a 4 which means he is universal.

Over 13 canine blood groups have been described. Eight DEA (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen) types are recognized as international standards. Naturally occurring antibody is found against DEA 3, 5, and 7. DEA 1.1 and 1.2 antibody-antigen interactions result in acute hemolytic transfusion reactions. DEA 3, 5, and 7 antibody-antigen interaction in vivo results in permanent red blood cell sequestration and loss in 3 to 5 days. DEA 4 antibody-antigen interactions produce no effect on red blood cell survival in vivo. A dog possessing DEA 4 and no other antigen is considered a "universal" donors.

Hope this helps.

Drake donates blood on the regular basis- he the universal donor blood type.  We do it at Tufts University and they credit our account $50 every time Drake donates so thats an extra bonus!  There is always a need for blood, especially for universal donors :)
