What antibiotics are safe for a pregnant female? She got dog bit and has a laceration. The area was clipped and cleaned. We used an antibiotic spray, but unfortunately it is in an area we cannot wrap. We do not want to stress her anymore than she was when this accident happened for risk of loosing the litter. We also don't want her to get an infection. She is half way through her pregnancy. Any suggestions?

My vet said that Baytril was safe- kinda expensive though.

AMOXICILLIN!! don't use anything else and I would ask another vet. I have always been told NO Baytril for pups so I wouldn't want to use it on a preg bitch

amoxicillin . NOT Baytril especially where pups are involved unless it's a last resort on a very sick bitch then you might have to. The thing with Baytril according to the few studies done on it, is that it can not be given to 9 month old puppies because of the effects on the growth plates at that age. Vets often forget that so owners need to keep that in mind. I HAD to give it on a lactating bitch once but it was a last resort because of concerns with the pups. The vets concluded that the benefits out weighed the risks. I verified that with the RPh and I gave my consent to give it. I am not a vet so I can not advise you what to give. Take her to your vet, that's the best thing to do. At the very least call them and tell them what you told us and see what they say.

Do NOT give Baytril, best bet is to bring her into the vets office. Cephalexin, or Amoxi are the best bets for pregnant bitches. Is it infected now, how deep is it, if it's not deep and doesn't look infected( red, swollen or oozing) then it might be best to just leave it alone and clean it topicaly. Flush it out several times a day with provodine iodine diluted half and half with water.

LawDog   In my opinion is would only use a mild mixture of antibacterial soap (dial regular liquid) and water. use a large syringe and flush the bite wound twice per day. This method is approved by a vet and from experience, It works very well. Be sure and let the wound heal from inside out.   If you feel it necessary to use an oral antibiotics, please consult with your vet. find a antibiotic that is known not to cross the placenta. My opinion I would use Cephelexin.   I really don't think you will need to use oral antibiotics unless infection has already set in.   Good Luck!!!   Pup

LOL Davinhoff   I did not read your post, that would work also. JMO I would not use as strong with the provodine iodine.   Pup

Lawdog,

I had a pregnant female that got a very bad bladder infection about 4-5 weeks into her pregnancy. My vet put her on amoxicillin, they said it was safe for pregnant bitches, but I ended up with 3 pups born with their intestines outside their body. This was her 3rd litter of pups, the first two litters were all nice and healthy, infact her second and third litter of pups were by the same sire. I would never, ever use antibiotics on a pregnant bitch unless you absolutely had to.  Good luck.

I am lucky enough to have a Veterinarian who makes house calls. Except of course this time he is out of state in the mountains with no cell coverage. I posted here because she was already put into a stressful situation getting bit. I didn't want to stress her out more than I had to by taking her into a strange Vets office. It is red and swollen. I clipped the hair away and it does ooze, not any gross abnormal color. I am keeping it clean. Gentamicin spray and once it dries I spray it with Aluspray.

Stay away from Clavamox, I used it on my pregnant bitch years ago, & she had two very strange pups that had one eye that was wide open, like a fish eye, or something you'd see on a stuffed animal, it even moved around............probably too much info..............

Just clean it well, like pup instructed, good advice, & keep an eye on her temp.
