Ok everyone, I have been thinking long and hard about his, but I still can't decide.  With out bashing me, or my dog!, please give me your pros and cons to neutering.  Chaos is a gorgeous long coated shepherd and he is my show dog.  He is a champion and I had planned on going for his grand championship.  With all of the politics in the show world, and the huge selection of GSD's out there, I feel it's going to be almost impossible to achieve his grand championship, being a long coat.  JMO.  I was also told by judges that in their eyes, he looks like he just doesn't care and doesn't want to be in the show ring!  And that we are not a team like we need to be to get anywhere!  Kind of turned me off a little hearing all of that.  I haven't shown Chaos since the beginning of July, and haven't really missed it.  I figure that I can always continue obedience with him if I chose to go that route.  I have also heard that it would really calm his aggression issues down too if I had him neutered.  I know that most of you will give sound advice and I am looking forward to hearing it.  Thanks ahead of time.

FIRE IN THE HOLE!

long coats are not allowed for breeding, according to the SV rules.  coats usually  have better bone and pigment.

what other qualities does your dog have to offer to the breed?

When in doubt, snip away!

If you don't miss the showing anymore, no need to keep him intact. Your boy is a nice looking dog and I know you are proud of him and love him more than anything but fact is, he has a major fault. We already have thousands of short haired faulted dogs to choose from. Not really any more to say, except maybe wait until he is 2 to do it. You will love him just as much without his boys attached.

This.... I coined from the WUSV standard of  the GSD... regarding LONG SMOOTH COAT...

"...however, provided there is sufficient undercoat, it may be passed for breeding, as long as the breed regulations of the country allow it."

The link for the translation is here...If you care to dissect it...

Sorry to say but, yes, neuter him. He will still be your best friend and he will still be gorgeous etc. but a longcoat should not be bred end of story. Sometimes / always ya just have to suck it up and do what the standard dictates whether we like it or not and whether we agree or not. He's a beautiful dog. Nuts don't make the dog. Snip, snip.

Hi ShepherdWomen, I think Chaos is gorgeous!  I would like to say congratulations on getting him titled! Hey, I know it's hard, but try not to get discouraged, You know, if you are still interested in showing.... I would at least try for the Grand CH title, maybe he was having a bad day??? If you are just not interested in showing him anymore.. I would probably get him neutered, I would be more concerned with his aggression issues, not his coat length.  I  wish you luck with what ever you decide.

ShepherdWomen,

I to think you and Chaos have done a wonderful job making him a champion!! I too wouldn't give up just becuase some judges think he doesn't like what he's doing. He could've had a bad day or two like Lisa2004 said. I think you should try to go for the Grand Championship, what's it going to hurt!!! As far as the neutering taking care of his aggression issues? I personally don't think that really helps the aggression issues at all, myself. I have a rescue that was neutered when he was around 1 1/2-2 years old and he still has issues with certain dog's. Hell, he still thinks he's intact and this has been 3 years now. Basically the choice is yours on whatever you choose to do. He is your dog, no one elses, and you know him better than anyone.

Good Luck on your decision!!

What the heck is a grand champion?  Must not be AKC?  I would neuter him, he is long coat so he should not be bred.  If he doesn't miss it and you don't miss it why not?  As others said, wait till he is mature before you do it though.

I was once told by a wise lady (not too long ago) "I would be more concerned about the health, hips, elbows and temperament then the how long the fur is"

just a thought

The UKC provides two distinct levels of championships: The Grand Championship is the highest comformation title attainable from the UKC.
